(Translation of the completed passage, with all five blanks filled in.)

One rainy day, I got on the train on my way home from work. That day I had with me a precious cherry blossom umbrella that a friend had given me. I was very tired, so I fell asleep in my seat for a little while. When I went through the ticket gate at my station, I realized that I had nothing in my hands. I had left my umbrella on the train.

It was still raining outside, but what worried me was not getting wet. That umbrella is not just an umbrella to me. I stood at the station exit, wondering what to do. Then a woman I did not know spoke to me and asked, “Is something wrong?” When I told her about the umbrella, she took me to the station staff.

The station attendant told me to write down the color and the shape of the umbrella on a piece of paper. I am not good at writing Japanese, but the woman next to me helped me with it. Then the attendant said, “If we find it, I will call you.” Hearing those words, I felt a little relieved.

The next day, the station really did call me. When I hurried to the station, my cherry blossom umbrella was there, placed on a table. The attendant told me, “The person who found it on the train brought it in.” In my country, even if you look for something you left on a train, you almost never find it. That day, I felt that I had received not only my umbrella but also people’s kindness.

Full explanation▾

English“〜te shimatta” shows regret about something bad that happened, and “no desu” explains the reason for the sentence before it. Option 1 means she almost forgot it but did not, option 3 talks about past experience in general, and option 4 is a guess about the future — none of them fit something that really happened on that day.

EnglishShe is standing at the exit, and then something happens — “suruto” connects two events that follow one another. “Tatoeba” gives an example, “tsumari” rephrases, and “shikashi” shows contrast. You have to read both sides of the blank to answer this type.

English“Sono kotoba” points back to the attendant’s words in the sentence just before. “Ano” is for something both people already know, “watashi no” would wrongly make it her own words, and “dareka no” is used when you do not know who spoke. Always check the sentence before the blank, including who is speaking.

EnglishThe subject is the umbrella, which cannot act by itself, so the passive “okarete imashita” is correct. “〜rarete iru” describes the state left by someone else’s action. Options 1 and 2 make the umbrella or the writer the one who put it there, and option 4 is passive but predicts the future instead of describing what she sees. Compare the blank with the active sentence that follows: someone brought it to the station.

English“〜to shitemo” means “even if,” which fits the negative result that follows. “Sagaseba” is a conditional that expects a good result, “noni” is used when you really did something and the result was different, and “nagara” means doing two things at the same time.
