(Translation of the completed passage, with all five blanks filled in.)

Last night, when I came home from work and tried to turn on the light in my room, the light did not come on. The refrigerator had stopped too, and my room was pitch dark. I had no idea at all what had happened. That day I bought some food at the convenience store and went to bed early.

This morning I found an envelope from the electric power company on my desk. Inside, it said, “We have not been able to confirm your electricity payment.” I had been busy with work recently and had completely forgotten to pay. I hurried to the convenience store and paid the electricity bill. However, even after I got home, the power still did not come on.

I became worried and asked my landlord about it. He told me, “Don’t worry, the power will come on if you wait a while. It takes a little time from when you pay until the power comes back.” Hearing that, I felt relieved. And around noon, I was able to use the electricity again.

Because I never want this kind of thing to happen again, I have decided to put the payment date for each month into my smartphone calendar. If I had prepared in advance, I would not have forgotten to pay. In my country, you often get a phone call before your power is cut off, so I thought Japan would be the same. From now on, I am going to be careful myself.

EnglishThe paragraph describes what happened last night, so the past form is required. Option 1 is an invitation, option 3 is a request to someone else, and option 4 expresses an expectation — none of them fit a past fact about the writer herself.

EnglishShe paid the bill, but the power still did not come on — the opposite of what she expected, so “tokoroga” is correct. “Sorede” links cause and natural result, “sono ue” adds a point in the same direction, and “tatoeba” gives an example. This question type always requires reading both sides of the blank.

EnglishThe state changes from unusable to usable, so we need the potential form “tsukaeru” with “〜you ni naru.” Option 1 “you ni suru” means you actively make the change. Option 2 is the passive “tsukawareru” (someone used it) — be careful, the passive and the potential look alike. Option 3 is hearsay.

EnglishThe word points back to the writer’s own very recent experience, so “konna” (this kind of) is correct. “Anna” refers to something distant in the past, “donna” is a question word, and “ironna” means “various kinds.” Choose between konna, sonna and anna according to the distance from the speaker.

English“〜te okeba, 〜ta hazu desu” expresses regret about the past. Option 1 “temo” (even if) contradicts the second half, option 3 “ta noni” is used when you actually did the action, and option 4 “nagara” means doing two things at once.
