When you buy food at a supermarket, it has either a “best-before date” or a “use-by date” written on it. The two words look similar, but they do not mean the same thing. The best-before date is the date until which the food tastes good, and the use-by date is the date until which the food is safe to eat.
Which one is written depends on the type of food. Food that goes bad quickly, such as lunch boxes, sandwiches, and raw fish or meat, has a use-by date. In many cases it is the same day or the next day. Food that can be kept for a long time, such as cans and snacks, has a best-before date. This one can be several months ahead. In both cases, the date applies before you open the bag or the box, and only if the food has been stored in the way that is written on it.
Some people throw food away as soon as the best-before date has passed by a little. However, I think that is a little wasteful. It does not mean that you can no longer eat the food once that day has passed. Of course, it is better to follow the use-by date. If you know the difference between the two dates, you can avoid wasting food.
The correct answer is 2. “It” points back to the sentence just before: people throw food away as soon as the best-before date has passed by a little. Paragraph 1 explains that the best-before date is the date for eating food at its best taste, so choice 2 restates this. Choice 1 talks about the use-by date, which the writer says we should follow, so throwing that food away is not a waste. Choice 3 is about storage in paragraph 2, and choice 4 is about eating rather than throwing away.
The correct answer is 3. Paragraph 2 says that food which goes bad quickly, such as lunch boxes, sandwiches, raw fish and meat, carries a use-by date, and paragraph 1 says the use-by date is about eating safely. Putting these two facts together gives choice 3. Choices 1 and 4 have the wrong type of food, because cans and snacks are the ones that keep for a long time. Choice 2 has the wrong meaning of the date, because taste belongs to the best-before date. Each wrong choice matches only one of the two points.
The correct answer is 4. The last sentence of paragraph 3 says that if you know the difference between the two dates, you can avoid wasting food, and this is the conclusion of the whole text. Choice 1 says to throw away food past either date, which is the opposite of the writer’s view. Choice 2 swaps the two dates, since the writer says we should follow the use-by date. Choice 3 stretches the time to several months and also ignores paragraph 2, which says both dates apply before the package is opened.
