Passage ①
Dear Mr. Nakamura,
Thank you very much for signing up with us. Here is some information about starting your electricity and gas.
You can use the electricity from March 15. You do not need to be there. Please turn on the breaker by the entrance yourself.
To turn on the gas supply, a visit by a member of our staff is necessary. He or she will come at about 2:00 p.m. on March 15, so please wait at home. It does not have to be you; a family member aged 18 or over is fine.
If you would like to change the time, please call us by March 13.
Passage ②
Last spring, a young person moved into the room next door. The next day, that person came to say hello and brought a towel. I had thought that few people do this now, so I was surprised.
At that time, I also felt it was a little troublesome. However, after that, we began to talk naturally when we met in the corridor, and once he even took in a parcel for me while I was out.
Of course, you can live your life without greeting your neighbours. Even so, thanks to those three minutes, I have been able to live comfortably this year. When I move house myself, I will go and say hello to the people next door.
The correct answer is 3. Paragraph 4 says a staff member will come at about 2:00 p.m. on March 15 and asks the customer to wait at home. Choice 1 is wrong because the customer turns on the breaker himself, and the staff member is not involved. Choice 2 is the opposite of the text, which says no one needs to be present for the electricity. Choice 4 is wrong because the call to change the time must be made by March 13, not on the 15th.
The correct answer is 2. Paragraph 3 says that thanks to those three minutes, the writer was able to live comfortably for a year, showing that a short greeting can make life with neighbours easier. Choice 1 is too strong: the writer accepts that you can live without greeting people and only describes his own plan. The feeling of trouble in choice 3 is a passing feeling in paragraph 2, and he never calls it wrong. The parcel in choice 4 is a result of becoming friendly, not the purpose.
