This morning I had completely forgotten that I had to get to the office early because of an important meeting. I rushed out of the house and somehow managed to reach the meeting room one minute before it started.
Just as I sat down and let out a sigh of relief, a loud ringtone began to sound from inside my bag. Everyone in the room looked at me. I hurriedly ended the call and bowed my head, saying, “I am very sorry.” I had forgotten to put my phone on silent mode.
After the meeting, my section manager came over to speak to me. “Anyone can forget. But if you only think, ‘I’ll be careful next time,’ the same thing will happen again. That changes nothing. Decide, once and for all, that you will check your phone before you enter the meeting room.” In other words, what matters is not strong willpower but arranging things so that your body always moves in the same fixed order. From that day on, I always check the settings in front of the door.
The reason is not stated in paragraph 2. You have to connect it with “I rushed out of the house” in paragraph 1.
“それ” refers to the sentence just before it — only thinking “I’ll be careful next time”. With demonstratives, look at what comes just before.
The conclusion comes after “つまり”: not willpower, but deciding the action in advance.
