最近、AI翻訳の技術は驚くほど進んでいます。スマートフォンに話しかけるだけで、すぐに外国語に翻訳してくれる時代です。そのため、「もう自分で外国語を勉強しなくても、AIがあれば十分だ」と考える人も増えているようです。たしかに、外国を旅行したり、店で買い物をしたりするだけなら、AI翻訳で困ることはほとんどないでしょう。
しかし、AIは言葉の「意味」を伝えることはできても、言葉の「心」まで伝えるのは難しいのです。言語は、その国の文化や人々の考え方と深く結びついています。例えば、日本の小説やアニメには、言葉の裏にかくれた感情やユーモアがたくさんあります。日本語を勉強してはじめて、それらを本当に楽しめるようになるのです。
また、「お疲れ様」や「いただきます」のような日本独自の表現は、他の言語にはほとんどありません。その言葉が生まれた文化を知らなければ、正しく使うことはできないのです。さらに、日本で働きたい人にとっては、言葉のニュアンスがもっと大切になります。同じ「わかりました」でも、言い方一つで相手への印象が大きく変わるからです。
外国語の勉強には、長い時間と努力が必要です。しかし、苦労して学んだ言葉で話しかければ、相手は「自分たちの文化を大切にしてくれている」と感じ、心を開いてくれます。つまり、言語を学ぶ本当の意味は、単に言葉を訳すことではなく、その言語を使う人たちの「心」を理解できるようになることなのです。

Recently, AI translation technology has advanced remarkably. We live in an age where you can just speak to your smartphone and it instantly translates into a foreign language. Because of this, more and more people seem to think, “I don’t need to study a foreign language myself — AI is enough.” Indeed, if you only travel abroad or shop at stores, AI translation will rarely cause you any trouble.
However, while AI can convey the “meaning” of words, it is difficult for it to convey their “heart.” Language is deeply tied to a country’s culture and its people’s way of thinking. For example, Japanese novels and anime are full of emotions and humor hidden behind the words. Only after studying Japanese can you truly enjoy them.
Also, uniquely Japanese expressions such as “otsukaresama” and “itadakimasu” barely exist in other languages. Unless you know the culture these words were born from, you cannot use them correctly. Furthermore, for people who want to work in Japan, the nuances of words become even more important. Even the same “wakarimashita” can give a very different impression depending on how you say it.
Studying a foreign language takes a long time and much effort. However, if you speak to someone in a language you worked hard to learn, they will feel that you value their culture, and they will open their hearts to you. In other words, the true meaning of learning a language is not simply translating words, but becoming able to understand the “heart” of the people who use that language.

問4（主旨） 正解：1。最後の「つまり」の後が筆者の結論です。本文の「心」を、選択肢では「気持ちや考え方」と言いかえています。The conclusion comes right after つまり. The text’s「心」is paraphrased as “feelings and ways of thinking.”
- 1：「人たちの『心』を理解できるようになること」の言いかえ。主旨に合う。
- 2：AIをもっと使うべきだ、という主張はしていない。
- 3：「お疲れ様」は一つの例にすぎない。例と主張を区別しよう。
- 4：ニュアンスの理解や文化を楽しむことは第2・3段落の「例」。結論はさらにその先の「人たちの心を理解すること」。主旨より範囲がせまい。
