Time & Sequence
This is the third of four quizzes for Section 1. The five questions are about timing and order: what happens at a certain moment, how a long wait ends, what comes first, and what changes along with something new. The sentences come from everyday life and the news: Christmas Eve at home, a hospital, an izakaya, a school graduation, and a new shopping mall. Choose the best answer for each blank, then read the usage note to see why the other choices don’t fit.

① Someone sees, catches, or helps you while you are ~ing. ② In polite greetings: even though you are ~ (used to thank someone or apologize).
On Christmas Eve, I was quietly putting a present by my daughter’s pillow when she woke up and caught me.
A neighbor saw me looking at my phone while I was walking. How embarrassing!
Thank you so much for coming all this way today. Next time you’re in the area, please let me know.
Use ところを when someone sees or catches you in that moment: 娘に見つかった (my daughter caught me). Use ところに (card 11) when someone comes in or something happens at that moment: 娘が起きてきた (my daughter woke up and came in). Greetings like 遠いところを also use ところを, meaning “even though you are ~.”
After a long time of ~ (hesitating, struggling), things ended badly. Shows disappointment or frustration.
I was kept waiting at the hospital for two whole hours, only to see the doctor for three minutes.
After an hour of trying to decide, I came home without buying anything.
After a big fight between the kids, the TV remote ended up broken.
あげく is only for a disappointing result. 末に (card 17) can also be used for a good result, as in finally writing an essay you’re happy with after rewriting it many times.
〜か〜ないかのうちに ka ~ nai ka no uchi ni
Almost at the same moment as ~, the next thing happened, before ~ had even finished.
My dad had barely sat down at the izakaya when he ordered, “A beer to start!”
My kid starts eating before he’s even finished saying “itadakimasu.”
This library book is so hard that I get sleepy almost as soon as I open it.
They look alike, but 座らないうちに means “before he even sat down.” ないうちに is a different pattern, and it can be followed by “let’s ~”: 忘れないうちに、メモしておこう (Let’s write it down before we forget).
Before ~. Something is done first, to get ready for an important or official event.
Ahead of the graduation ceremony, the graduating students practiced their entrance in the gym over and over.
Before the wedding, our two families got together for dinner.
Ahead of the movie’s release in Japan, the lead actor visited the country.
に先立って is for getting ready before an event, like practicing for a ceremony. 際に (card 06) is for what happens at the event itself, like having your name called. Don’t use に先立って for small everyday things: say 出かける前に, not 出かけるに先立って.
① As ~ changes, something else changes along with it. ② Because of ~ (an opening, a move, construction), something else happens.
With the opening of a big shopping mall in the suburbs, traffic jams now occur on nearby roads on weekends.
Due to the elevator inspection starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow, the elevator will be out of service for about an hour.
As prices have gone up, more people have started making their own bento.
Both can mean “as ~ changes.” But に伴って also works with one-time events like an opening, a move, or construction. につれて needs a gradual change, like getting colder.
