Time & Sequence
This is the second of four quizzes for Section 1. The five questions are about time: how things change over time, what happens at the very moment you do something, and what has continued since then. The sentences come from everyday life: a cold winter day, an old hobby, bad timing at home, a mountain climb, and life in Japan. Choose the best answer for each blank, then read the usage note to see why the other choices don’t fit.

〜とともに to tomo ni
As ~ changes, something else changes along with it. It can also mean “together with ~” or “at the same time as ~.”
The longer I’ve lived in Japan, the more I’ve found myself thinking in Japanese.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gradually started waking up earlier.
The meanings of words slowly change with the times.
とともに can show change (“as ~ changes”), and it can also mean “together with” or “at the same time as.” に伴って (card 15) is only for changes and events. For doing something with people, only とともに works: 家族とともに暮らす (live with your family), not 家族に伴って.
The moment ~ happened. What follows is a sudden change or something unexpected.
On a cold day, the moment I opened the door of a warm shop, my glasses fogged up completely, and I couldn’t see a thing.
The second I took a bite, I couldn’t help saying, “This is delicious!”
As soon as I stepped off the train, I realized I’d left something behind.
たとたん also works for your own actions. かと思うと (card 19) is for quick changes you watch in other people or things, like a brother who comes home and goes right back out. It is not used for your own actions.
After ~, nothing more happened. The next expected thing never came.
I took a few guitar lessons in high school, but I haven’t played in years.
I have lots of clothes I bought last year and never wore even once.
The last time I saw Tanaka-san was at a class reunion five years ago.
きり means nothing more happened after ~. っぱなし (card 8-03) means something was left as it was, like a guitar left out instead of being put back in its case.
Just when ~ was about to happen, was happening, or had just happened, someone came or something happened.
Just as I was about to get in the bath, the doorbell rang.
A friend dropped by just as the cake came out of the oven.
I had just finished tidying the room when the kids came home covered in mud.
Use ところに when someone comes or something happens at that moment. Use ところを (card 12) when someone sees, stops, or helps you at that moment, as in being called back by your mother just as you’re leaving the house.
Ever since ~. A state has continued from that time until now.
Ever since I climbed Mt. Fuji last summer, I’ve been completely hooked on hiking.
Ever since we got a cat, I look forward to coming home every day.
This shop has sold ramen at the same price since the day it opened.
て以来 covers the whole time from then until now. てから just means “after,” so it also works for a one-time action, like buying hiking gear right after the climb.
