JLPT N2 文法クイズ:条件・仮定 (1/4)
Condition
All five sentences here set up a condition. Some are real, some are only imagined, and the right form often depends less on the first half than on what comes after the blank. Read each sentence through to the end before you choose. Every question gives you the answer, the connection rule, and native audio at two speeds.

Q1. 今回の企画は自分から…
〜上は ue wa
📌 動詞辞書形・た形 + 上は ※ 「こうなった上は」の形でよく使う。
💡 もう決まったこと・起きてしまったことを受けて、「〜したのだから、当然〜する」と言う。後ろには決意や覚悟、義務が来る。かたい言い方。
Now that ~ / since ~. Something has already been decided or has already happened, so the speaker states a firm decision or a duty. Formal.
① 今回の企画は自分から言い出した上は、途中で投げ出すわけにはいかない。
Since I was the one who proposed this project, I can’t walk away from it halfway through.
② こうなった上は、正直にすべてを話すしかない。
Since it has come to this, the only option is to tell the whole truth.
③ この道で生きていくと決めた上は、どんなに苦しくても続けるしかない。
Now that I’ve decided to make my life in this field, I have to keep going, however hard it gets.
上は=もう〜したのだから、当然(契約を結んだ上は、期限は必ず守らなければならない)/た上で=〜してから、次に(家族とよく相談した上で、引っ越し先を決めます)。 「で」と「は」の1文字違いで、意味はまったく違います。会話では 上は より「からには」「以上(は)」を使うのがふつうです。
上は and た上で are one letter apart but mean completely different things: 上は is “now that ~,” and た上で is “after doing ~.” In everyday conversation, people usually say からには or 以上(は) instead.
Q2. すぐにだめになる安い物を…
〜くらいなら kurai nara
📌 動詞辞書形 + くらいなら ※ ぐらいなら とも言う。
💡 前のこと(いやなこと)をするより、後ろのほうがまだましだ、という話し手の強い気持ちを表す。
Rather than ~. The speaker sees the first option as unpleasant, so even the second one looks better.
① すぐにだめになる安い物を買うくらいなら、多少高くても長く使える物を選びたい。
Rather than buy something cheap that falls apart right away, I’d pay a bit more for something that lasts.
② 満員電車に1時間も乗るくらいなら、早起きして自転車で行くよ。
Instead of spending a whole hour on a packed train, I’ll get up early and bike there.
③ こんな雨の中を並んで待つくらいなら、今日はあきらめて帰ったほうがましだ。
I’d rather give up and go home today than stand in line in rain like this.
くらいなら=辞書形に付く。AよりBのほうがまし(並んで待つくらいなら、帰る)/ものなら=可能形に付く。かなわない願い(帰れるものなら、今すぐ帰りたい)。 どちらも「なら」で終わりますが、前の動詞の形が違います。
くらいなら follows the dictionary form and compares two options. ものなら follows the potential form and expresses a wish that probably won’t come true.
Q3. 部長のパワハラには、もう…
〜てはいられない te wa irarenai
📌 動詞て形 + はいられない ※ 話し言葉では「〜ちゃいられない」とも言う。「いつまでも〜てばかりはいられない」の形もよく使う。
💡 今の状況では、〜している余裕はない。すぐに動かなければ、というあせりや決意を表す。
Can’t afford to keep ~ing. Says the situation leaves no room to go on doing something, with a sense of urgency or a decision to act.
① 部長のパワハラには、もう黙ってはいられない。社長に報告しよう。
I can’t stay quiet about my manager’s harassment any longer. I’m going to report it to the president.
② えっ、テストまであと3日しかないの? のんびりしてはいられないな。
Wait, the test is only three days away? I’d better stop taking it easy.
③ 山の天気が急に変わってきた。景色を楽しんではいられない。すぐに下りよう。
The weather up here has turned suddenly. This is no time to enjoy the view — let’s get down.
てはいられない=そんなことをしている場合ではない(人の失敗を笑ってはいられない)/ずにはいられない=どうしても〜してしまう(おかしくて笑わずにはいられない)。 形はよく似ていますが、意味はほぼ反対です。
They look alike but mean almost the opposite. 笑ってはいられない means “this is no time to laugh,” while 笑わずにはいられない means “I can’t help laughing.”
Q4. このマラソン大会では…
〜であれ de are
📌 名詞・な形容詞 + であれ ※ 疑問詞 + であれ(誰であれ・何であれ・どうであれ)/「AであれBであれ」の形もある。
💡 「〜でも、関係なく同じだ」と言う、かたい言い方。動詞や い形容詞には付かない。
No matter who or what ~. A formal way of saying that the situation makes no difference. It doesn’t follow verbs or i-adjectives.
① このマラソン大会では、順位がどうであれ、完走した人全員にメダルが贈られる。
In this marathon, everyone who finishes gets a medal, whatever their placing.
② 相手が誰であれ、お客様の個人情報を教えることはできません。
No matter who is asking, we can’t give out our customers’ personal information.
③ この奨学金は、国籍が何であれ、成績がよければ申し込める。
Anyone can apply for this scholarship, whatever their nationality, as long as their grades are good.
であれ=おもに名詞に付き、かたい(どんな小さな仕事であれ、手を抜いてはいけない)/としても=動詞や形容詞にも付き、会話でも使う(たとえ時間がかかるとしても、自分の力で解決したい)。 意味は近く、入れ替えられる文も多いです。会話では「理由はどうであれ」のような決まった言い方を除いて、「〜でも」がふつうです。
であれ mainly follows nouns and is formal. としても also follows verbs and adjectives and works in conversation. The two can often swap. In everyday talk, apart from set phrases, people usually just say 〜でも.
Q5. 家事を手伝わなかったら嫌味を言われるし…
〜ば〜で ba ~ de
📌 動詞ば形 + 同じ動詞のた形・辞書形 + で ※ い形容詞ければ + 同じ い形容詞 + で/な形容詞・名詞 + なら + 同じ語 + で
💡 「そうなったら、それはそれで〜」。多くは、そうなったことで新しく出てくる別の問題を言う。「それならそれで」と受け入れるときにも使う。
If it’s ~, that brings its own ~. Usually points to a new problem that comes with the situation. It can also mean “if that’s how it is, fine.”
① 家事を手伝わなかったら嫌味を言われるし、手伝えば手伝ったで、今度は下手だと文句言われるんだ。
If I don’t help around the house I get snide remarks, and when I do help, then it’s complaints that I’m no good at it.
② お金は、なければ困るが、あればあるで、また別の悩みが生まれる。
Not having money is a problem, but having it brings a different set of worries.
③ 夢のマイホームも、建てれば建てたで、掃除や修理の手間が増える。
Even the house you dreamed of brings its own load of cleaning and repairs once it’s built.
ば〜で=そうなったら、それはそれで別の問題がある(背が高ければ高いで、合う服を探すのが大変だ)/ば〜ほど=〜するにつれて、ますます(考えれば考えるほど、分からなくなる)。 形はよく似ていますが、意味はまったく違います。
The forms look very similar, but the meanings are completely different. ば〜ほど means “the more ~, the more ~.”
