Time & Sequence
This is the first of four quizzes for Section 1. The five questions are about time and order: what comes first, what happens at a certain time, and how things change. The sentences come from a shop email, a news-style report, everyday advice, and personal stories. Choose the best answer for each blank, then read the usage note to see why the other choices don’t fit.

First do ~, then do the next thing based on it. Used after an important step like thinking, checking, or discussing.
With a used car, you should test-drive it first and then decide whether to buy it.
After talking it over with my family, I decided to study abroad.
I booked the hotel after carefully looking at the room photos and reviews.
た上で means you decide based on what you learned in the first step. てから only shows the order. For simple order, like washing your face and then brushing your teeth, use てから.
Someone realizes, understands, or becomes able to do something only after ~.
I never knew how amazing bakers are until I tried baking bread myself.
It wasn’t until I lived on my own that I realized how much my mother did for me.
Only when I put on glasses did I notice that I hadn’t been seeing well.
てはじめて is followed by a positive: “only after ~ did I understand.” てからでないと (card 09) is followed by a negative: “you can’t understand until ~.” With a negative ending, the two mean almost the same.
As soon as ~, (I’ll / we’ll / please) do the next thing. Used for future plans, promises, and requests.
Once the shipping procedure for your order is complete, we will let you know by email.
We’ll show you to a table as soon as one is free.
We will close registration right after all the seats are filled.
Use 次第 for what you will do as soon as something is done. たとたん (card 02) is for something unexpected that already happened at that moment.
Something is gradually changing right now. The change is still in progress.
In recent years, more and more people overseas have been learning Japanese.
The area around the station is slowly changing, isn’t it?
The long winter is over, and the snow in the mountains is melting bit by bit.
つつある means a change has already started and is still going on. かねない (card 6-02) means something bad might happen in the future, so it doesn’t fit with 近年 (“in recent years”).
When ~ / at the time of ~. A formal way to say とき, common in notices, requests, procedures, and polite talk.
I got this scar when I was in an accident last month.
When you come to Kyoto, please drop by our place.
Anyone moving house must file a notice at the city office.
際 is a polite, formal way to say とき. It fits when you talk to a doctor or someone older. With friends, people usually say とき.
