(Translation of the completed passage, with all five blanks filled in.)

I work at a Japanese company, and every morning I ride my bicycle to the station. One morning, I overslept. When I got to the station the bicycle parking lot was already full, so in my hurry I left my bicycle on the road outside. I thought it would probably be fine, since I would be back that night.

That day I finished work and returned to the station around nine at night. But my bicycle was not in the place where I had left it that morning. I thought someone had stolen it and started to worry. Just then, a person from a nearby shop told me, “Bicycles aren’t allowed here. A city truck came in the early evening and took away all the bicycles that were parked here.”

On the utility pole there really was a notice saying, “Please do not park bicycles here.” That morning, in my hurry, I had not noticed that notice at all. My bicycle had not been stolen — it had been taken away by the city staff. The next day I paid 2,000 yen at the distant storage lot and got my bicycle back.

If I had spent just one more minute looking around me that day, I don’t think this would have happened. Now I always check the signs before I park my bicycle. In my country, there are no such detailed rules about parking a bicycle. But now I understand that the streets are always clean and easy to walk along because everyone follows the rules.

EnglishAt that moment she guessed that everything would probably be fine, so “darou” is correct. Option 1 states a past fact, option 3 is hearsay (she heard it from nobody), and option 4 contradicts the situation — if she had thought that, she would not have left her bike there.

EnglishShe expected her bicycle to be there, but it was gone — a surprising turn, so “tokoroga” is correct. “Sorede” links cause and result, “tsumari” rephrases, and “tatoeba” gives an example. The key skill here is reading the sentences before AND after the blank.

English“Sono harigami” points back to the notice mentioned in the previous sentence. “Ano” is for something both writer and reader already know, “aru” introduces something new, and “donna” is a question word. Always read the sentence BEFORE this kind of blank.

EnglishThe particle “ni” marks the doer, so the passive “motte ikareta” is needed. Option 1 is the active form the shop worker used (“the city truck took them away”) — from the writer’s side, the same event must be expressed in the passive. Option 2 is the potential form, and option 4 is the causative (she made someone take it). Remember that “~reru” can be potential or passive — decide by meaning.

EnglishThis sentence expresses regret: if she had looked, this would not have happened, so the conditional “~ba” is correct. “Temo” (even if) reverses the meaning, “nagara” means doing two things at once, and “noni” would mean she really did look — which she didn’t.
