(Translation of the completed passage, with all five blanks filled in.)

I came to Japan one year ago, and now I work at a restaurant. When I had just arrived in Japan, I was very afraid of speaking Japanese, because I thought it would be embarrassing if I made a mistake. So, apart from what I needed for work, I hardly spoke at all.

One day, the manager said to me, “You should talk more. Even if you make a mistake, nobody will laugh.” So, little by little, I started talking to my Japanese coworkers myself. At first it was only simple greetings, but gradually I became able to have longer conversations, too. These days, I sometimes even go out with my coworkers on our days off.

If you want to become good at Japanese, I think speaking a lot is important. Of course, studying with textbooks is also necessary. But with that kind of study alone, your speaking skills will not grow easily. Making mistakes is nothing to be ashamed of. I believe I can improve exactly as much as the mistakes I make.

I really want people who are going to work in Japan to try speaking to others first. It takes courage at the beginning, but once you try, your daily life will surely become more fun.

📖 くわしい解説かいせつ Full explanation▾

Q1 正解:1(話しませんでした)

「日本に来たばかりのころ」から始まる、過去の思い出の段落です。だから過去形が必要です。2「〜ないでください」は相手へのお願い、3「〜はずです」は「たぶんそうだろう」という予想、4「〜ましょう」はさそいの形なので、どれも自分の過去の話には合いません。

EnglishThe paragraph describes a past memory, so the past form is required. Option 2 is a request to someone else, option 3 expresses a guess, and option 4 is an invitation — none of them fit a story about the writer’s own past.

Q2 正解:3(それで)

店長のことば(原因)→ 話しかけるようになった(結果)という流れです。原因と結果をつなぐ「それで」が正解。「たとえば」は例、「つまり」は言いかえ、「ところが」は後ろにびっくりする内容が来るときに使います。

EnglishThe manager’s words are the cause, and the change in behavior is the result, so “sorede” (so / that’s why) is correct. “Tatoeba” gives an example, “tsumari” rephrases, and “tokoroga” introduces a surprising turn.

Q3 正解:2(そういう勉強)

前の文の「教科書の勉強」を指す指示語の問題です。すぐ前に話に出たものを指すときは「そういう」を使います。「ある〜」は特定しないものを出すとき、「どちらかの」は二つから一つ選ぶとき、「これからの」は未来の話になってしまい、前の文とつながりません。空欄の前の文を必ず読みましょう。

English“Sou iu” points back to “studying with textbooks” in the previous sentence. This question type always requires reading the sentence BEFORE the blank — that is the key skill of 問題3.

Q4 正解:4(なれる)

「上手になることができる」という意味の可能形「なれる」+「と思っています」です。1「なられました」は尊敬語の形なので自分には使いません。2「される」は「する」の受身形です。「上手になる」(自分が変わる)と「上手にする」(何かをよくする)はよく間違えるので注意しましょう。また、「なれる」(可能)と「される」(受身)は形が似ていますが、意味は全く違います。3「〜そうだ」は人から聞いた話(伝聞)なので、自分の信念には合いません。

EnglishWe need the potential form “nareru” (can become) with “to omotte imasu” (I believe). Option 1 is honorific (never used about yourself). Option 2 “sareru” is the passive of “suru” — be careful with the classic mix-up between “jouzu ni naru” (you change) and “jouzu ni suru” (you change something), and note that “na-reru” (potential) and “sa-reru” (passive) look alike but mean completely different things. Option 3 is hearsay.

Q5 正解:2(話しかけてみれば)

「一度〜すれば、きっと〜はずです」という、条件+強い予想のセットです。「〜ても(even if)」や「〜のに(残念な気持ち)」「〜ながら(同時)」は、後ろの「きっと楽しくなるはず」と意味がつながりません。

EnglishThe set phrase is “ichido ~ sureba, kitto ~ hazu desu” (once you try, it will surely…). “Temo” (even if), “noni” (although, with regret), and “nagara” (while doing) all break the logical link with “kitto … hazu.”
