Quick answer: Use トイレ (toire) every day. Use お手洗てあらい (otearai) to be polite — at work, in restaurants, or with people you don’t know well. You don’t need 便所べんじょ (benjo); it sounds old and rough.

💡 自分じぶんの家いえ? 友ともだちの家いえ? / Your home, or someone else’s?
Same toilet, but the verb changes. At your own home you “go” (行いく). At someone else’s home you “borrow” (借かりる).
同おなじトイレでも、自分じぶんの家いえは「行いく」、人ひとの家いえは「借かりる」です。

場面ばめん / Situationフレーズ / Phrase
自分じぶんの家いえで / At home ちょっとトイレ行いってくるね。
I’m going to the bathroom. (行いく)
友ともだちの家いえで / At a friend’s house ちょっとトイレ借かりてもいい?
Can I use your bathroom? (借かりる)
▶ Why “borrow”? / なぜ「借かりる」?
In Japanese, you “borrow” a toilet that is not yours — even though you don’t take it anywhere! 借りる is used for using someone else’s place or things. This is why the polite phrase later is お手洗いをお借りしてもよろしいでしょうか?

2. お手洗てあらい(otearai)— the polite word

お手洗い - polite Japanese word for restroom in business settings
What kind of word is this? / どんな言葉ことば?
お手洗い means “a place to wash your hands.” It is polite and safe everywhere — at work, in restaurants, or with people you don’t know well.
お手洗てあらいは「手てを洗あらう場所ばしょ」という意味いみです。丁寧ていねいで、どこでも安心あんしんして使つかえます。

💡 Business tip: don’t leave during a meeting / 会議中かいぎちゅうは席せきを立たたない
In Japan, leaving your seat during an important meeting is often seen as rude. Most people go before the meeting starts. If you really must go, be quick and quiet, and always say 「お手洗てあらい」, not 「トイレ」.
大切たいせつな会議かいぎの途中とちゅうで席せきを立たつのは、失礼しつれいだと思おもう人ひとが多おおいです。ほとんどの人ひとは会議かいぎの前まえに済すませます。

3. 便所べんじょ(benjo)— the word you can skip

便所 - old-fashioned blunt Japanese word, rarely used today
What kind of word is this? / どんな言葉ことば?
便 means “toilet waste,” so 便所 sounds rough. People stopped using it in daily talk about 20 years ago. You don’t need this word.
「便べん」は汚きたない意味いみなので、便所べんじょはきつい言いい方かたに聞きこえます。今いまはあまり使つかいません。
⚠️ For learners / 学習者がくしゅうしゃへ

What does it mean? / どんな意味いみ?
洗面所 is the room with a sink. It is NOT the toilet.
洗面所せんめんじょは「シンクがある部屋へや」です。トイレではありません。

🏠 In many Japanese homes, the toilet and the sink room are separate rooms.

🏠 日本にほんの家いえでは、トイレと洗面所せんめんじょは別べつの部屋へやのことが多おおいです。

⚠️ Easy to mix up! / 間違まちがえやすい!
❌ 「洗面所せんめんじょを貸かしてください」 does NOT mean “may I use the toilet.” You may just be shown the sink!

お花摘み・雉撃ち - Japanese euphemisms for going to the toilet outdoors

Japanese has some cute, secret ways to say “I’m going to the toilet.” / トイレを遠回とおまわしに言いう面白おもしろい言葉ことばがあります。

🌸 お花摘はなつみ(ohanatsumi)— women’s word
It means “to pick flowers.” Women use it to say “I’m going to the toilet” (outdoors).
「お花はなを摘つむ」という意味いみです。女性じょせいが使つかいます。
▶ Where does it come from? / 由来ゆらい
It comes from mountain climbing. There are no toilets in the mountains, so women said “I’m going to pick flowers” as a polite excuse. Squatting in the grass looks a little like picking flowers.
登山とざんの言葉ことばです。山やまにはトイレがないので、こう言いいました。
🐦 雉撃きじうち(kijiuchi)— men’s word
It means “to hunt a pheasant” (a bird). Men use it the same way.
「キジ(鳥とり)をとる」という意味いみです。男性だんせいが使つかいます。
▶ Where does it come from? / 由来ゆらい
Also from mountain climbing. A man crouching in the bushes looks like a hunter waiting for a pheasant. There is even a funny split: 大雉おおきじ (big pheasant) for number two, and 小雉こきじ (small pheasant) for number one. This word stayed mostly among climbers.

These words show something nice about Japanese: a gentle way of speaking that softens things, so no one feels embarrassed.
