Q1 — 動かせる / the potential form of a transitive verb
この荷物は重くて私では動かせない。
This luggage is heavy and I cannot move it.
荷物(にもつ):luggage, package
机が大きすぎて一人では動かせない。
The desk is too big to move alone.
机(つくえ):desk
病気で体が動かせなかった。
I could not move my body because of illness.

Q2 — によって / “depending on ~ / varies by ~”
この料理の味は、シェフによって全然違う。
The taste of this dish varies completely, depending on the chef.

Q3 — 〜させてください / “Please let me ~ / Please allow me to ~”
少し考えさせてください。
Please let me think about it for a moment.
この会議に参加させてください。

会議(かいぎ):meeting / 参加(さんか):participation
私に説明させてください。
Please let me explain.
説明(せつめい):explanation
写真を撮らせてください。
Please let me take a photo.
写真(しゃしん):photo / 撮る(とる):to take (a photo)
帰らせてください。Please let me go home. (I want to leave — may I?)
帰ってください。Please go home. (you are telling THEM to leave!)
⚠️ In a workplace, 帰ってください can sound very rude — as if you are kicking someone out.
Q4 — につれて / “as ~ / the more A, the more B”
歳を取るにつれて、だんだん目が悪 くなる。
As one gets older, eyesight gradually worsens.
歳を取る(としをとる):to get older, to age
技術が進むにつれて、生活 が便利になった。
As technology advanced, life became more convenient.
技術(ぎじゅつ):technology, skill / 便利(べんり):convenient
話を聞くにつれて、興味 が湧いてきた。
As I listened to the story, my interest gradually grew.
興味(きょうみ):interest / 湧く(わく):to well up, to arise
春になるにつれて、気温が上がってきた。
As it became spring, the temperature gradually rose.
気温(きおん):air temperature
歳を取るにつれて、目が悪くなる。As one ages, eyesight worsens. (both change together)
人によって、目の良さが違う。Eyesight differs from person to person. (varies by who)
⚠️ Key difference: につれて = two things change together over time. によって = one thing is the reason for variation.
Q5 — 〜なりがち / “tend to become ~ / often end up ~”
家で仕事をすると運動不足 になりがちだ。
When working from home, you tend to lack exercise.
運動不足(うんどうぶそく):lack of exercise
疲れていると食事が不規則 になりがちだ。
When tired, meals tend to become irregular.
食事(しょくじ):meal / 不規則(ふきそく):irregular
忙しいと連絡が遅れがちになる。
When busy, communication tends to be delayed.
連絡(れんらく):contact, communication / 遅れる(おくれる):to be late, to be delayed
冬は運動量が減りがちだ。
In winter, the amount of exercise tends to decrease.
運動量(うんどうりょう):amount of exercise / 減る(へる):to decrease
運動不足になりがちだ。You tend to lack exercise. (it happens often, not ideal)
運動不足になるわけだ。No wonder you lack exercise. (I understand now!)
⚠️ わけだ is NOT about tendency — it means “now I understand the reason.”
Q6 — でさえ / “even ~ / even [an extreme example]”
この歌は難しい。歌手 でさえ歌うのが大変だろう。
This song is difficult. Even a professional singer would find it hard to sing.
歌手(かしゅ):singer
子供でさえ知っている簡単 な問題だ。
It is a simple problem that even children know.
簡単(かんたん):simple, easy / 問題(もんだい):problem, question
先生でさえ答えられない質問だ。
It is a question that even the teacher cannot answer.
質問(しつもん):question
親友でさえ秘密を話せなかった。
I could not tell the secret even to my best friend.
親友(しんゆう):best friend / 秘密(ひみつ):secret
歌手でさえ歌えない。Even a singer cannot sing it. → (so of course ordinary people cannot)
私より上手だ。She is better than me.
⚠️ より just compares two things. でさえ has the feeling of “wow, even THIS person!”
医者でしか治せない。Only a doctor can cure it.
医者(いしゃ):doctor
Q7 — なのに / “even though ~ / despite ~” (with surprise or complaint)
まだ春なのに、今日は真夏のようにとても暑 い。
Even though it is still spring, it is as hot as midsummer today.
真夏(まなつ):midsummer
一生懸命勉強したのに、テストに落 ちた。
Even though I studied hard, I failed the test.
一生懸命(いっしょうけんめい):with all one’s effort / 落ちる(おちる):to fail (a test)
お金を払ったのに、商品 が届かない。
Even though I paid, the product has not arrived.
商品(しょうひん):product, item / 届く(とどく):to arrive, to be delivered
先輩なのに、後輩に敬語 を使っている。
Even though she is a senior, she uses polite language toward her juniors.
先輩(せんぱい):senior (in age or experience) / 後輩(こうはい):junior / 敬語(けいご):honorific language
春なのに暑い。Even though it is spring, it is hot. (spring IS real → but the result is surprising)
春だとしても、この寒さはおかしい。Even if it were spring, this cold would be strange.
⚠️ なのに = REAL fact. だとしても = IMAGINARY situation.
春だからこそ、花見をしよう。Precisely because it is spring, let’s go flower viewing.
花見(はなみ):flower viewing (cherry blossoms)
⚠️ だからこそ means A leads naturally to B. なのに means A leads to a SURPRISING B.
Q8 — わりに / “for ~ / considering ~ / but unexpectedly”
初めて作ったわりに美味しくできた。
Considering it was my first time making it, it turned out delicious.
安いわりに品質がいい商品だ。
This product has good quality for its price. (It is cheap, but surprisingly good.)
品質(ひんしつ):quality / 商品(しょうひん):product
若いわりにしっかりしている。
She is responsible for her age. (She is young, but surprisingly mature.)
しっかりしている:to be responsible, mature, reliable
努力したわりに結果が出なかった。
Despite how hard I tried, I did not get results.
努力(どりょく):effort, hard work / 結果(けっか):result
安いわりにいい。Good quality for the price. (cheap → expected bad → but actually good → surprise!)
練習のおかげで上手になった。Thanks to practice, I got better.
練習(れんしゅう):practice
雨のために試合が中止になった。The game was cancelled because of rain.
試合(しあい):game, match / 中止(ちゅうし):cancellation
Q9 — わけがない / “there’s no way ~ / it’s impossible that ~”
あの2人が離婚するわけがないよ。すごく仲 がいい。
There is no way those two will get divorced. They get along so well.
離婚(りこん):divorce
彼がそんなうそをつくわけがない。正直な人 だ。
There is no way he would tell such a lie. He is an honest person.
うそをつく:to tell a lie / 正直(しょうじき):honest
こんな難しい問題が10分で解 けるわけがない。
There is no way you can solve such a difficult problem in 10 minutes.
解く(とく):to solve
先生がそんな間違いをするわけがない。
There is no way the teacher would make such a mistake.
間違い(まちがい):mistake
離婚するわけがない。There is no way they will divorce. (I’m sure — maybe even offended!)
先生がここにいるはずがない。The teacher cannot be here. (logically, it makes no sense)
⚠️ わけがない is more emotional. はずがない is more logical/calm.
離婚するわけだ。Oh, so THAT’S why they are divorcing. (I now understand the reason.)
⚠️ わけがない = “impossible!” / わけだ = “I see, that makes sense!” — Do not confuse these!
Q10 — うちに / “while ~ / before the situation changes”
聞いたことを忘れないうちに、メモを取ろう。
Let’s take notes while we still remember what we heard. (before we forget)
熱いうちに食べてください。
Please eat it while it is still hot. (before it gets cold)
若いうちに世界中を旅行 したい。
I want to travel around the world while I am still young. (before I get old)
世界中(せかいじゅう):all over the world / 旅行(りょこう):travel
雨が降らないうちに帰ろう。
Let’s go home before it starts raining.
降る(ふる):to fall (rain, snow)
忘れないうちにメモを取ろう。Let’s take notes before we forget. (we WILL forget eventually — so hurry!)
日本にいるときに、富士山に登 った。When I was in Japan, I climbed Mt. Fuji.
⚠️ ときに is neutral. うちに has urgency — “do it NOW before things change!”
一言言ったばかりに友達をなくした。Just because I said one word, I lost my friend.
⚠️ ばかりに is about past regret. うちに is about future action (“let’s do it now”).
