This room feels dusty. Let’s clean it.
She often acts in a childish way.

That child is in elementary school, but they speak in a very adult-like way.
— She seems masculine. (she’s a woman; can sound critical)
— He’s very manly. (he IS a man, with manly qualities; positive)
— ✗ (unnatural — らしい is used for someone who genuinely IS that thing)
っぽい = “feels like ~; -ish” — usable even when the subject is NOT actually that thing. Often negative. らしい = “truly ~; typical of ~” — for things that genuinely embody expected traits. Usually positive.
— It looks like it rained. (inference from observation)
— That child seems adult-like. (characteristic / impression)
っぽい = describing a characteristic or impression (personality / appearance).
“I heard that ~; apparently ~.” Reporting information received from a source (news, another person).
“In other words, ~; so that means ~.” Summarizing or drawing a conclusion.
According to the news, the trains will apparently stop from next week.

In other words, she’s not coming, right?
The fact that you didn’t pass means you need to study more.
- ニュースによると = according to the news
- つまり = in other words / that is to say
All three can report hearsay. ということだ often names the source explicitly. らしい has a stronger personal inference nuance. そうだ (hearsay) directly reports what was heard/read.
— I was late because the train was delayed. (my own reason)
からだ = “it’s because ~” — explains a personal reason. Cannot be used to report news or information heard from others.

- 急に = suddenly
- 〜ようとしない = will not even try to ~ / refuse to ~

— The moment I went out, it started to rain. (AFTER going out)
ようとする = the moment BEFORE the action (about to do ~). たとたん = the moment AFTER the action is done (the instant ~ happened). These are OPPOSITE timings!

As long as you are healthy, that alone is enough.
- 〜さえあれば = as long as ~ exists / if only ~ is there
- 〜さえすれば = as long as you do ~ / if you just do ~
- 十分 = enough / sufficient
- 連絡する = to contact / to let someone know
「さえあれば」=〜があればOK(肯定の条件)
— If only I had time, I’d go on a trip.
— If only there hadn’t been that rain, we could have won.
さえあれば = “if only ~ exists” (positive condition for success). さえなければ = “if only ~ didn’t exist” (negative wish or regret). Opposite meanings!

— Thanks to my friend, I passed. ✓
— Because of my friend I was late. ✓
— ✗ (passing is good — せいで doesn’t fit)
おかげで = “thanks to ~” for GOOD results (gratitude). せいで = “because of ~” for BAD results (blame/frustration). Never mix them up!
— Because of practicing, I won. (neutral reason, no gratitude)

— For a beginner, they’re pretty good. (unexpectedly good)
— expresses contrast between expectation and result. Not used to blame or explain a bad outcome.
— As expected of a professional, the performance is outstanding.
だけに = “precisely because ~; as expected from ~” — emphasizes a fitting or positive reason. No nuance of blame unlike せいで.

— I exercise for the sake of my health. (purpose)
ために = “for ~; in order to ~; because of ~” — expresses purpose or cause. Does not mean substituting one thing for another.

— I was so tired I could barely stand. (extreme example)
— The more you practice, the better you get. (proportional)
くらい often shows an extreme example (“so ~ that ~”). ほど is used for proportional patterns (“the more ~, the more ~”) and comparisons.
— It’s so bad I can barely stand. (degree)
— ✗ (unnatural — “the only thing is that I can’t stand” doesn’t make sense here)
だけ = “only ~; just ~” — limits to one thing. Cannot replace くらい when expressing an extreme degree.

— The moment I practiced, I could play it well. (one-time event)

— It appears no one is there. (slightly more formal ✓)
みたい and ようだ have almost identical meanings (both express inference from observation). みたい is casual/conversational; ようだ is slightly more formal or written.
