JLPT N2 文法クイズ:原因・理由 (3/4)
Cause & Reason
Four more questions on cause and reason in N2 grammar. The sentences range from a stiff, essay-like line to polite talk at work, so think about how formal each one is. In one question, three of the choices start the same way, so look closely at what each one means. After each answer, the usage note gives two more examples and compares the form with a lookalike.

Q1. 料理教室に申し込んだ…、毎回休まずに…
〜以上(は) ijou (wa)
📌 普通形 + 以上(は)(な形容詞・名詞は「である」) ※ 「以上は」の「は」は省略できる
💡 〜のだから、当然〜しなければならない/〜するつもりだ。立場や決まり、自分で決めたことから、当然のことを言う。
Now that ~, naturally (I must / I will) ~. States what follows from your position, a rule, or your own decision.
① 料理教室に申し込んだ以上は、毎回休まずに通うつもりだ。
Now that I’ve signed up for the cooking class, I intend to go every time without missing a lesson.
② 日本に住んでいる以上、日本の法律を守らなければならない。
As long as you live in Japan, you have to follow Japanese law.
③ 社会人である以上、約束の時間は守らなければならない。
As a working adult, you have to be on time for appointments.
以上(は)とからには(2-07)は、ほぼ同じ意味。以上 は、立場や決まりから「当然〜すべきだ」と言うときによく使う。 上(じょう)(7-10)は名詞に付いて「〜の面で」の意味。以上 とは別。
以上 and からには (card 2-07) mean almost the same. 以上 is common when a role or a rule makes something a duty. Don’t mix it up with 上 (じょう, card 7-10), which follows a noun and means ‘in terms of.’
Q2. 人間は未来を知らない…、希望を持つ…
〜ゆえ(に) yue (ni)
📌 名詞 + ゆえ(に) / 普通形 +(が)ゆえ(に)(な形容詞・名詞は「である」) ※ 名詞の前では「〜ゆえの」(若さゆえの失敗)
💡 〜だから。理由を表す、とてもかたい書き言葉(論文・小説・スピーチなど)。
Because of ~. A very formal written way to give a reason, used in essays, novels, and speeches.
① 人間は未来を知らないがゆえに、希望を持つことができる。
Humans are able to have hope because they do not know the future.
② 若さゆえの失敗は、だれにでもあるものだ。
Everyone makes mistakes that come from being young.
③ 豊かさゆえに、人は本当に大切なものを見失うことがある。
Because of abundance, people sometimes lose sight of what truly matters.
ゆえ(に)=〜だから(とてもかたい書き言葉)/から・ので=ふだん使う理由。 会話で使うと大げさに聞こえる(今月はお金がないゆえに → お金がないから)。
ゆえ(に) is a very formal ‘because.’ から and ので are the everyday words. In casual talk, ゆえに sounds overdone.
Q3. あまりにも忙しかった…、今日は昼食を…
〜ものだから mono da kara
📌 普通形 + ものだから(な形容詞・名詞は「な」) ※ 会話では「もんだから」とも言う。ていねいに言うときは「ものですから」
💡 〜なので。自分の事情を説明して、「だから仕方がなかった」と言いわけをするときに使う。
Because ~. Used to explain your situation as an excuse, as if to say ‘it couldn’t be helped.’
① あまりにも忙しかったものですから、今日は昼食を食べるのをすっかり忘れてました。今から食べに行ってきてもいいですか。
I was so busy that I completely forgot to eat lunch today. May I go and eat now?
② 彼はまだ入社したばかりなものですから、この会社のルールをよく分かっていないんですよ。大目に見てやってください。
He only just joined the company, you see, so he doesn’t really know our rules yet. Please go easy on him.
③ うちはまだ子どもが小さいものですから、夜の会議にはなかなか出られないんです。
Our kids are still small, you see, so I can hardly ever make evening meetings.
ものだから=〜なので(言いわけ・事情の説明)/ものの=〜けれど(3-01)/ものなら=もし〜できるなら(4-01)。 ふだんの会話で、若い人はあまり使わない(「すごく疲れてて、返事しないで寝ちゃった」のように言う)。年上の人の話し言葉や、ビジネスでよく使う。
ものだから gives an excuse. ものの (card 3-01) means ‘although,’ and ものなら (card 4-01) means ‘if one could.’ Young people rarely use ものだから in casual talk; it’s common among older speakers and at work.
Q4. 数学が苦手…、毎日少しずつ問題を…
〜からこそ kara koso
📌 普通形 + からこそ(な形容詞・名詞は「だからこそ」)
💡 ほかの理由ではなく、まさに〜だから。理由を強く言う。
Precisely because ~. Stresses that this is the real reason.
① 数学が苦手だからこそ、毎日少しずつ問題を解くことにしているんです。
I’m bad at math, and that’s exactly why I make a point of solving a few problems every day.
② 友だちだからこそ、耳の痛いことも正直に伝えるんだよ。
It’s because we’re friends that I tell you things you’d rather not hear.
③ 休みが少ない仕事だからこそ、貴重な休日は家族とゆっくり過ごしたい。
Precisely because my job gives me few days off, I want to spend my precious holidays relaxing with my family.
からこそ=ほかの理由ではなく、まさに〜だから(強める)/から=ふつうの理由。 文の最後に「〜のだ/〜んだ」を付けることが多い。
からこそ stresses that this exact reason matters. から is an ordinary reason. Sentences with からこそ often end in 〜のだ or 〜んだ.
