JLPT N2 文法クイズ:原因・理由 (2/4)
Cause & Reason
Five more questions on cause and reason in N2 grammar. Some sentences are casual talk and one is a written notice, so think about how formal each sentence is. In some questions, the choices connect to the word before the blank in different ways, so check the connection, too. After each answer, the usage note gives two more examples and compares the form with a lookalike.

A feeling was so strong that something unusual happened — something you did without thinking, or something bad. Used when emotions run high.
① 息子が一人暮らしを始めたころは、心配のあまり、毎日のように電話をかけてしまった。
When my son first started living on his own, I worried about him too much and ended up calling him almost every day.
② アメリカ人の友人は忍者が好きなあまり、とうとう日本まで旅行に来た。
My American friend loves ninjas so much that he finally traveled all the way to Japan.
③ 寝坊してあわてるあまり、左右ちがう靴をはいて家を出てしまった。
I overslept, and in my panic I left home wearing two different shoes.
あまり(に)=気持ちや程度が強すぎて、思わず〜してしまった(文の途中で使う)/あまり〜ない=それほど〜ない(副詞)。 会話では「〜すぎて」と言うことが多い(緊張しすぎて、名前を言いまちがえちゃった)。
〜あまり(に) means a feeling or degree went so far that something unusual happened. Don’t mix it up with the adverb あまり〜ない, which means ‘not very.’ In casual talk, people usually say 〜すぎて instead.
Q2. 待ち合わせにはいつも早く来る山本さん…、今ごろはもう駅で…
〜ことだから koto da kara
📌 名詞(人)の + ことだから
💡 (性格やいつもの行動をよく知っている)あの人なら、きっと〜だろう。
Knowing ~ (someone you know well), they will surely ~.
① 待ち合わせにはいつも早く来る山本さんのことだから、今ごろはもう駅で待っているはずだ。
Yamamoto-san always gets to meeting places early, so he should already be waiting at the station by now.
② 心配性の部長のことだから、この企画もすぐには決めないだろう。
Our manager worries about everything, so he probably won’t decide on this plan right away.
③ おしゃべりな田中さんのことだから、この話もあっという間にみんなに広まるに違いない。
Tanaka-san loves to chat, and I’m sure this story will spread to everyone in no time.
ことだから=(よく知っている)あの人なら、きっと〜/ことだし=理由を一つ挙げて、さそう・決める(2-18)。 後ろには「きっと〜だろう」「〜はずだ」のような判断が来ることが多い。
ことだから predicts from someone’s character. ことだし (card 2-18) gives a reason for a suggestion. After ことだから, you usually find a guess like きっと〜だろう or 〜はずだ.
Q3. 応募の締め切りを一日…、せっかくのチャンスを…
〜ばかりに bakari ni
📌 動詞た形・い形容詞 + ばかりに / な形容詞な + ばかりに / 名詞である + ばかりに ※ 「〜たいばかりに」は「〜したい気持ちが強くて」の意味(会いたいばかりに)
💡 ただ〜だけが原因で、悪い結果になってしまった。後悔や残念な気持ちを表す。
Just because of ~, something bad happened. Shows regret or disappointment.
① 応募の締め切りを一日勘違いしていたばかりに、せっかくのチャンスを逃してしまった。
I had the application deadline wrong by just one day, and that alone cost me a great chance.
② よけいなことを一言言ったばかりに、友だちを怒らせてしまった。
Just because I said one thing too many, I made my friend angry.
③ 今のアパートは駅から遠いばかりに、友だちがなかなか遊びに来てくれない。
My friends hardly ever visit, all because my apartment is far from the station.
ばかりに=一つの行動や事情だけが原因で、悪い結果に(後悔の気持ち)/あまり(に)=気持ちや程度が強すぎて、思わず〜してしまった(2-03)。 「〜たばかりだ」(〜したすぐあと)とは意味がちがう。
ばかりに blames one action or fact for a bad result, with a feeling of regret. あまり (card 2-03) is about a feeling or degree that went too far. Don’t confuse ばかりに with 〜たばかりだ, which means ‘have just done.’
Q4. この車で先日事故を起こしてしまったんだけど、さすが、高い…よ。
〜だけのことはある dake no koto wa aru
📌 普通形 + だけのことはある(な形容詞は「な」、名詞はそのまま) ※ 名詞の例:さすがプロだけのことはある
💡 さすが〜だ。評判・人気・値段・実績にふさわしい、すばらしい結果を見て納得する。文の最後に置く。
No wonder ~ / It lives up to ~. You see an excellent result and feel it matches the reputation, popularity, price, or track record. Comes at the end of a sentence.
① この車で先日事故を起こしてしまったんだけど、さすが、高いだけのことはあるよ。乗ってた人は全員無傷だったんだ。
I got into an accident in this car the other day, but it really lives up to its high price. Everyone in it came out without a scratch.
② このラーメン、本当においしい!みんなが1時間も並ぶだけのことはあるね。

③ 50歳を過ぎても、あんなに速く泳げるなんて。元オリンピック選手だけのことはある。
He’s over 50 and still swims that fast. You can tell he’s a former Olympic swimmer.
だけのことはある=文の最後に置く/だけあって=同じ意味で、文の途中に置く(2-11)。 会話では「〜だけある」「〜だけはある」と短く言うこともある。
だけのことはある goes at the end of a sentence. だけあって (card 2-11) has the same meaning but sits in the middle. In conversation, people may shorten it to 〜だけある or 〜だけはある.
Q5. (銀行のお知らせ)本日は祝日…、窓口は…
〜につき ni tsuki
📌 名詞 + につき ※ 「〜中につき」の形が多い(準備中につき)
💡 〜という理由で。お知らせ・はり紙・看板などで使う、かたい言い方。

(Sign in a park) Under construction. No entry beyond this point.
③ (駐車場のはり紙)満車につき、しばらくお待ちください。
(Sign at a parking lot) The lot is full. Please wait a little while.
につき=お知らせ・はり紙で使う理由/ため=書き言葉で広く使う理由。 「お一人様につき1点まで」の につき は「〜ごとに」の意味。
につき gives the reason on notices and signs. ため is the general written word for ‘because of.’ In お一人様につき1点まで, につき means ‘per’: one item per customer.
