〜(よ)うが〜まいが you ga ~ mai ga
Whether or not ~. Says it makes no difference either way. What follows is something that won’t change, often with a strong feeling from the speaker.
Whether the fish are biting or not, my father heads out to sea every Sunday morning. It’s fishing itself that he loves.
Believe it or not, this really happened.
Whether they apologize or not, I’m never going back to that restaurant.
(よ)うが〜まいが lists both cases: “whether it happens or not.” としても imagines only one case: “even if it happens.”
Without ~. In the pattern 〜なしには〜ない, it stresses that something is essential: if it’s missing, the result is impossible.
No matter how many times I watch it, I can’t get through this movie without crying.
My roommate went and put a huge sofa in the living room without even asking me.
You can’t get this restaurant’s most popular dish without a reservation.
なしには means “without it, something is impossible.” ぬきで is for leaving out something that is normally there, like skipping breakfast. In the pattern “can’t ~ without ~,” the two can often swap.
Unless ~, (nothing can happen). Stresses that the first thing must happen before anything else can. The second half is negative in meaning, such as “can’t” or “won’t know.”
You can’t tell what a used car is like from photos alone. You can’t decide whether to buy it until you’ve seen it with your own eyes.
We can’t make a concrete plan before the budget is set.
You can’t really know what’s good about a town until you’ve lived there.
Both can mean “unless.” If the second half is positive, use
If ~ actually happens, that brings its own problems. Almost the same as 〜ば〜で, and it can also be used to accept a situation: “If it happens, so be it.”
I’d always wanted some time off, but now that I’ve finally got a week, I don’t know what to do with myself and I’m actually bored.
Little kids wear you out, but once they’re older, the education costs start piling up.
I finally started living on my own, but the daily cooking and laundry are harder than I expected.
Both repeat the same verb, but the meanings are completely different. ば〜ほど means “the more ~, the more ~.”
If (by any chance) one could ~. Used for things that are hard or unlikely to happen, followed by a wish such as “I’d love to ~.” With 〜てみろ after it, it becomes a challenge: “You can’t, can you?”
I love history, so if I could travel back in time, I’d love to go at least once.
Get up at five and go running every morning, starting tomorrow? I’d like to see you try.
If I could be born again, I’d like to come back as a bird and fly.
ものなら follows the potential form and expresses a wish that probably won’t come true. ようものなら follows the volitional form and warns of a bad result.
