Q1. 関東風のうどんはつゆの色が濃い…
〜のに対して no ni taishite
📌 普通形 + のに対して / 名詞 + に対して ※ な形容詞・名詞は「な」を入れて「〜なのに対して」の形になる
💡 別々の2つを並べて、その違いをはっきり示す。
In contrast to ~. Two separate things set against each other so the difference shows.
① 関東風のうどんはつゆの色が濃いのに対して、関西風は色が薄く、だしの味がよく分かる。
Kanto-style udon comes in a dark broth, whereas Kansai-style broth is pale, and you can really taste the dashi.
② 売上が伸びているのに対して、利益はそれほど上がっていない。
Sales are growing, while profits haven’t risen anywhere near as much.
③ 砂漠では、昼は40度を超えるのに対して、夜は0度以下まで下がることもある。
In the desert, days can climb above 40°C, whereas nights can drop below zero.
のに対して=別々の2つを比べる/反面=1つのものの、反対の2つの面/一方(で)=どちらにも使える 関東風と関西風は別々のものなので、「反面」は使えません。
のに対して compares two different things. 反面 is for two sides of one thing.
Q2. お忙しい…
〜にもかかわらず ni mo kakawarazu
📌 普通形/名詞 + にもかかわらず ※ な形容詞・名詞は「だ」を取る(な形は「である」も可)
💡 〜なのに。ふつうならそうならないはずの結果になった、という驚きや不満。お礼の言葉では、相手が大変な中でしてくれたことへの感謝を表す。
In spite of ~. The result goes against what the situation would lead you to expect. In a thank-you, it shows you know the other person made time for you.
① お忙しいにもかかわらず、すぐにご返信いただき、ありがとうございます。
Thank you for your quick reply, despite your busy schedule.
② 大雨にもかかわらず、多くの人が集まった。
Despite the heavy rain, a lot of people turned up.
③ 「ごみを捨てないでください」という看板があるにもかかわらず、ここにごみを捨てていく人がいる。
Despite a sign asking people not to dump trash, some still leave theirs here.
にもかかわらず=〜なのに(かたい)/にかかわらず=〜に関係なく/くせに=責める気持ちが入る(会話) 「も」がないと「忙しいかどうかに関係なく」の意味になり、お礼の文になりません。
Without も, it means regardless of whether you’re busy — no longer a thank-you.
Q3. 親切のつもりで道を教えようとしたら、…
〜どころか dokoro ka
📌 普通形 + どころか ※ な形容詞の語幹・名詞はそのまま付く
💡 前の内容を打ち消して、実際はそれとかけ離れていると言う。差が大きいときに使う。
Far from ~. It denies the first half and says the truth is on a completely different level — often the opposite.
① 親切のつもりで道を教えようとしたら、感謝されるどころか、怪しい人だと思われてしまった。
I was only trying to be kind and give someone directions, but far from being thanked, I was taken for someone suspicious.
② 弟は漢字どころか、ひらがなもまだ書けない。
Forget kanji — my little brother can’t even write hiragana yet.
③ ダイエットを始めたのに、体重は減るどころか、2キロ増えてしまった。
I started a diet, and instead of losing weight, I’ve put on two kilos.
どころか=前を打ち消して、かけ離れた事実を続ける/どころではない=そんな余裕はない(文の終わりに使う)/といっても=想像より小さい、と下げる 「どころではない」は文の終わりに使います。「、」のあとに文を続けるなら「どころか」です。
どころか leads into the rest of the sentence. どころではない ends it.
Q4. 祖母は目が悪い…
〜ながら(も) nagara (mo)
📌 動詞ます形の語幹/い形容詞/な形容詞の語幹/名詞 + ながら(も) ※ 「〜しながら」(同時)と形が同じ。逆接のときは「も」を入れると分かりやすい。
💡 ふつうは一緒にならない2つが、同時に成り立っている。
Even though ~. Two things that don’t normally go together are true at the same time.
① 祖母は目が悪いながらも、毎年冬になるとセーターを編んでくれる。
My grandmother’s eyesight is poor, yet every winter she knits me a sweater.
② 新人ながら、彼は大きな契約をまとめた。
He was new, but he closed a big contract.
③ 何度も迷いながらも、最後は自分で留学を決めた。
I went back and forth many times, but in the end I decided on my own to study abroad.
ながら(も)=動詞・形容詞・名詞に付く/つつ(も)=意味はほぼ同じだが、動詞にしか付かない 「悪いつつも」とは言えません。形容詞や名詞のあとは「ながら(も)」です。
つつも only follows verbs. After an adjective or a noun, use ながらも.
Q5. 日本語の勉強を始めてまだ1年…
〜にしては ni shite wa
📌 普通形/名詞 + にしては ※ な形容詞・名詞は「だ」を取る
💡 はっきりした基準を出して、そこから予想することと合わないと言う。よい評価にも、悪い評価にも使える。
For a ~, surprisingly ~. You name a standard, then say the result doesn’t match it. The judgement can go either way — better than expected, or worse.
① 日本語の勉強を始めてまだ1年にしては、彼女の発音はとてもきれいだ。
For someone only a year into learning Japanese, her pronunciation is really good.
② 急いで作ったにしては、よくまとまった資料だ。
For something put together in a hurry, the document is well organized.
③ 有名なレストランにしては、サービスがあまりよくなかった。
For such a famous restaurant, the service wasn’t very good.
にしては=基準から予想することと合わない/だけあって=基準から予想したとおり/くせに=予想とちがううえに、人を責める気持ちが入る 予想より上手なら「にしては」、予想どおり上手なら「だけあって」です。
Better than the standard suggests: にしては. Just as good as expected: だけあって.
