(Translation of the completed passage, with all five blanks filled in.)

It has been two years since I came to Japan. Now I work at a supermarket in a small town in Kansai. At my Japanese language school, I understood my teachers well. However, when I started working at this store, I could hardly understand what my senior coworkers and the customers were saying. The Japanese in my textbooks and the Japanese of Kansai were a little different.

One day, my senior coworker Tanaka-san said to me, “Please naoshite oite that box.” I thought “naosu” meant “to fix,” so I searched very hard for the broken part of the box. However, nothing was broken anywhere. While I stood there holding the tape, not knowing what to do, Tanaka-san laughed out loud.

Still laughing, Tanaka-san told me, “In Kansai, ‘naosu’ means ‘to put away.'” What I should have put on the shelf was the box, not the tape. At my Japanese language school, I had never once learned that kind of usage. According to Tanaka-san, there are still many words like ‘hokasu’ and ‘erai’ in Kansai.

Now I love the words of Kansai. While listening to my senior coworkers talk, I am learning new words one by one. My country has dialects too, and people in the north and the south speak completely differently. So I think that learning words which are not in the textbook means becoming friends with the people of that town.

📖 くわしい解説かいせつ Full explanation▾

Q1 正解:2(分かりませんでした)

「この店で働き始めたとき」から始まり、後ろも「違っていたのです」と過去形なので、空欄も過去形にします。1「分かりません」は今のこと、4「分からないでしょう」は予想の形なので合いません。3「分かるようになりました」は良い変化を表しますが、前にしかしがあり、前の文「よく分かりました」と反対の内容が来るはずなので合いません。

EnglishThe sentence begins with “when I started working at this store” and ends with a past-tense sentence, so the blank must be past tense too. Option 1 is about now, option 4 is a guess, and option 3 means a positive change, which contradicts “however” after “I understood my teachers well.”

Q2 正解:3(ところが)

「壊れたところを一生懸命探した」→「どこも壊れていなかった」という予想外の展開です。びっくりする内容をつなぐ「ところが」が正解。1「それで」は原因→結果、2「たとえば」は例、4「そのうえ」は同じ方向の内容をつけ足すときに使うので、どれも合いません。

EnglishShe searched hard for a broken part, but nothing was broken — a surprising turn, so “tokoroga” is correct. “Sorede” links cause and result, “tatoeba” gives an example, and “sono ue” adds more in the same direction.

Q3 正解:1(そういう使い方)

すぐ前で「関西では『なおす』は『片づける』という意味だ」と説明されています。それを指す「そういう使い方」が正解です。2「どんな」は質問のことば、3「これからの」は未来の話、4「ある〜」は特定しないものを新しく出すときの言い方なので、どれも前の文とつながりません。この問題のように、空欄の前の文を読まないと解けない問題が、文章の文法では必ず出ます。

EnglishThe previous sentences explain that in Kansai “naosu” means “to put away,” so “sou iu tsukaikata” (that kind of usage) is correct. Option 2 is a question word, option 3 points to the future, and option 4 introduces something new and unspecified. Questions like this always require reading the sentences BEFORE the blank.

Q4 正解:3(あるそうです)

文の始めに「田中さんによると」があるので、人から聞いた話を伝える伝聞の「あるそうです」が正解です。2「ありそうです」は自分が見て感じたことを言う様態の形で、「あるそうです(伝聞)」と「ありそうです(様態)」は形が似ているので特に注意しましょう。1「ありました」だと今はない意味になり、4「あるでしょう」は自分の予想なので、「〜によると」と合いません。

EnglishThe sentence starts with “according to Tanaka-san,” so the hearsay form “aru sou desu” is correct. Be careful: “aru sou desu” (I hear that there are) and “arisou desu” (it looks like there are) look almost the same but are different. Option 1 suggests they no longer exist, and option 4 is the writer’s own guess.

Q5 正解:4(聞きながら)

「先輩の話を聞く」ことと「新しいことばを覚える」ことを同時にしているので、「〜ながら」が正解です。1「〜ても」は思いどおりにならないとき、2「〜のに」は残念な気持ち、3「〜ば」は条件を表す形で、「覚えています」という今の習慣とはつながりません。

EnglishShe is listening to her coworkers and learning new words at the same time, so “〜nagara” is correct. “Temo” is used when things do not go as expected, “noni” expresses disappointment, and “ba” states a condition — none of them fit the ongoing habit “oboete imasu.”
