⏱ Time Guide
- 📖 Reading: approx. 2.5–3.5 min
- ✏️ Answering: approx. 3–4 min
- 🎯 Target total: 6–7 min
💡 Tip: Watch for しかし, ところが and そこで. The writer changes his mind twice, and his real opinion comes at the very end.

At my company, a work-from-home system started three years ago, and many employees came to work remotely. When I heard I would no longer have to get on the packed train every morning, I was glad.
Once I started, there were many good points. The two hours a day of commuting became free time just like that. I can do the laundry during my lunch break, and there are days when I can concentrate in a quiet room.
However, after about half a year, problems appeared too. At home it is hard to tell work and private life apart, and before I know it I am still working late at night. Also, because I don’t see my colleagues face to face, even with a small question I hesitate, thinking, “Is this worth sending an email about?”
And what troubled me most was my Japanese study. I used to listen to a podcast every day on the train. Even on days when I couldn’t get a seat, I always listened for thirty minutes. But after I started working at home, the day would end while I was still thinking, “I’ll listen later.” Even though my time had increased, my study time had decreased.
At first I thought, “I can just decide based on what kind of work I have that day.” But days when I felt “I could probably do this at home today” kept coming, and gradually I stopped going in to the office. So I decided to go to the office on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Being able to choose freely where you work is certainly something to be grateful for. But the freer you are, the more quickly your life falls apart if you don’t keep to the pattern you set for yourself. What matters is not deciding every day which is better, but deciding in advance on a pattern you can keep up.
Paragraph 3 lists two troubles: working too late, and hesitating to ask small questions. The answer must cover both.
The fixed daily listening habit disappeared, and he kept putting it off.
The reason comes before そこで: deciding day by day led to almost never going in.
The last paragraph’s “not A, but B” pattern carries the writer’s conclusion.
