These days, people say that fewer and fewer people cook. Convenience stores and supermarkets are lined with bento boxes and side dishes you can eat just by heating them up. They are cheap and come in many varieties, so for busy people they are truly a blessing.
I used to be one of those people. I got home from work around nine every night, and I even thought that cooking was a waste of time.
But last winter, when I caught a cold and took a day off work, my mother made vegetable soup and brought it to me. It was not that the taste was anything special. Even so, the reason it warmed my heart was that I could feel my mother had spent her time for my sake.
From that day on, I began to stand in the kitchen on weekends. At first I made nothing but mistakes, but as I kept at it, I realised that the time spent cooking itself was more enjoyable than the finished dish.
Convenient meals save us time. But isn’t it also true that there are things you only understand once you move your own hands?
The pattern 〜のは、〜からです marks the reason. Option 2 restates it in different words, so match the meaning, not the vocabulary.
The writer valued the process more than the result; option 3 says the same thing in other words.
In this kind of essay, the main point comes after しかし in the final paragraph.
