Usage Notes
“As A changes gradually, B also changes in proportion.”
As I get older, my physical strength has been declining.
As the temperature rose, the number of ice creams sold also increased.
As I kept practicing, the mistakes gradually decreased.
As spring arrived, the days have been getting longer.
- 年を取る = to get older / to age
- 体力 = physical strength / stamina
- 気温 = air temperature
- 徐々に = gradually / little by little
Both mean “as A changes, B also changes.” But につれて is less natural when the result clause expresses the speaker’s intention or plan.
— Every time I go abroad, I bring back souvenirs.
たびに = “every time ~ happens, the same result occurs.” It shows repetition, not gradual change.
“To act following / in accordance with rules, instructions, or a person’s guidance.”
“As ~ changes, something else also changes.”
Following the teacher’s instructions, I moved to another classroom.
Following the map, I arrived at the destination.
As time passed, the pain gradually faded.
Please assemble the machine following the instruction manual.
- 指示 = instruction / direction / order
- 目的地 = destination
- 説明書 = instruction manual
- 組み立てる = to assemble / to put together
— Act according to the rules.
— ✗ (grammatically incorrect)
Only にしたがって can mean “follow instructions / rules.” につれて only expresses proportional change.
— The menu changes every 3 months.
ごとに expresses “every ~ interval” or “each time.” It cannot mean “following instructions.”
“There are times when ~. Not always, but it happens occasionally.”
He is a serious person, but there are times when he is late.
When I’m busy with work, there are times when I don’t eat lunch.
There are times when I go to the cinema on weekends.
My father does not usually cook, but there are times when he makes food on days off.
- 遅刻する = to be late / to arrive late
- 昼食 = lunch
- ふだん = usually / normally / as a rule
- 休日 = holiday / day off
— Even if my body feels terrible, I cannot take the day off work (because of responsibility).
わけにはいかない = cannot do ~ because of social obligation or what is morally right. Completely different from こともある which simply means “sometimes.”
— That is nothing more than a coincidence.
にすぎない = “nothing more than ~; merely ~.” It minimizes or downplays something. Unrelated to frequency.
“There is no other choice. I have no option but to do ~.” (often with a sense of resignation)
Since it’s raining, I have no choice but to use an umbrella.
The trains have stopped. I have no choice but to go on foot.
There is no more time. I have no choice but to give up.
I missed the last train. I have no choice but to take a taxi home.
- 終電 = last train of the day
- 乗り遅れる = to miss (a train / bus)
- 諦める = to give up / to resign oneself
- 「〜しかない」≒「〜ほかない」 (same meaning, slightly more formal)
— He left and has not come back since.
〜きり (after ta-form) = “since ~, nothing has changed.” Very different from しかない which expresses lack of alternatives.
— Please eat it while it’s still hot.
うちに = “while ~ / before the situation changes.” It’s about timing, not lack of options.
Without doing ~.”
Same meaning as ないで, but slightly more formal and literary.
I went to school without eating breakfast.
I went to sleep without doing my homework.
She left the room without saying a word.
She walked home in the rain without carrying an umbrella.
- 傘 = umbrella
- 持つ → 持たずに = without carrying / without having
— Please don’t run.
— ✗ (unnatural as a request)
Both mean “without doing ~,” but only ないで can be used for negative requests (ないでください). ずに is slightly more formal/literary and used for describing actions, not for making requests.
Form: Remove ない from the negative form, then add ずに.
Every time ~ happens, the same result occurs.”
Every ~ interval (a fixed regular cycle).”
Every time I arrived at a station, I got a stamp.
Please take this medicine every 8 hours.
People are all different; the way of thinking varies from person to person.
At this restaurant, the menu changes every three months.
- スタンプを押す = to stamp / to get a stamp
- 薬 = medicine
- それぞれ = each / respectively / individually
- 3か月 = three months
ごとに: “every N days/months” — each interval is counted. おきに: “with N days/months between each occurrence” — the interval is skipped. 2日ごとに = every 2 days; 2日おきに = every 3 days (with 2 days in between).
— Each time I took the test, my score went up.
— As I practiced, my score gradually went up.
ごとに emphasizes “each individual occurrence.” につれて emphasizes “gradual proportional change over time.”
“To judge / guess that ~ based on what you directly see, hear, or sense.”
It’s dark outside. It seems like it’s going to rain.
Her complexion looks bad. She seems to be unwell.
There are shoes at the entrance. It seems like someone is home.
I can hear a voice from the next room. It seems like someone is there.
- 顔色 = complexion / facial color
- 具合が悪い = to feel unwell / to be in poor condition
- 玄関 = entrance / front door (of a home)
— I can hear voices from the corridor. It seems someone is there. (direct observation)
— It seems Mr. Tanaka changed jobs. (heard from someone else)
ようだ is based on direct evidence you observe yourself. らしい is based on hearsay or indirect information from others.
ようだ and みたいだ have almost the same meaning. ようだ is slightly more formal/written; みたいだ is more conversational.
“Triggered by ~, I started doing ~. ~ was the turning point / starting point.”
Using my illness as a trigger, I quit smoking.
It was being invited by a friend that triggered me to start dancing.
That movie was the trigger that led me to start studying English.
Anime was the trigger that led me to start studying Japanese.
- きっかけ = trigger / turning point / opportunity that led to a change
- 誘われる = to be invited / to be asked
- 〜し始める = to start doing ~
— Thanks to my teacher’s guidance, I passed.
— A word from my teacher was the trigger that led me to start English.
おかげで = “thanks to ~” — implies a positive result and gratitude. がきっかけで = the triggering event/starting point — neutral about the result, just states what caused the change to begin.
— I wasn’t feeling well. That’s why I was absent.
わけで = “that’s why ~; so that means ~.” It explains a reason for a result, not a starting trigger for a new action.
“Rarely ~ / Seldom ~.” The frequency is extremely low (but not zero).
She rarely gets angry.
It rarely snows in this area.
He is rarely late.
Since I watch movies at home lately, I rarely go to the cinema.
- 怒る = to get angry
— I occasionally go to the cinema. (positive sentence ✓)
— I rarely go to the cinema. (negative sentence ✓)
— ✗ (unnatural combination)
たまに = “occasionally” — used with positive sentences. めったに = “rarely” — must be used with a negative form (ない). They are opposites in terms of grammatical environment.
全然〜ない = “not at all / never” (absolute zero). めったに〜ない = “almost never / rarely” (close to zero but not absolute zero). Don’t confuse them!
“As it is / while remaining in the state of ~; doing something without changing the current state.”
I accidentally entered the house while still wearing my shoes.
I fell asleep while leaving the TV on.
Please don’t go out while leaving the window open.
This fish is tastier grilled than eating it raw (as it is).
- 靴を履く = to put on shoes / to wear shoes
- テレビをつける = to turn on the TV
- 生のまま = as it is raw / in its raw state
- 焼く = to grill / to bake / to fry
— I slept with the light left on. (neutral description)
— I left the light on (carelessly) and went to sleep. (implies neglect or inconvenience)
まま is a neutral description of a state continuing. っぱなし implies something was carelessly left in an unresolved state, often with a negative nuance.
The ta-form is especially common — it means “while in the state of having done ~.”
