📖 用例ノート / Usage Notes
Q1. 〜わけにはいかない
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞(辞書形) + わけにはいかない
💡 「周りの人や社会のことを考えると、〜することはどうしてもできない。」(社会的・道徳的な理由による不可能)
“I cannot do ~ because of social or moral obligations.” Not a physical impossibility — something you feel you simply must not do.
① 試験の前日なのに、遊ぶわけにはいかない。
I can’t go out and play the night before an exam.
② 体が辛くても、この仕事を断るわけにはいかない。
Even though my body is struggling, I can’t turn down this job.
③ 友達の秘密だから、話すわけにはいかない。
It’s my friend’s secret, so I can’t tell anyone.
④ 大切な仕事があるので、今日は早退するわけにはいかない。
I have important work to do, so I can’t leave early today.
- 早退 = leaving early (before the normal end time)
- 断る = to refuse / to turn down
- 秘密 = secret
- 道徳的 = moral / ethical
「わけにはいかない」=道徳・社会的な理由でできない(強い気持ち)
「ほかない / しかない」=他に選択肢がない、あきらめてするしかない
✅ 重要な仕事があるから早退するわけにはいかない。— I morally/socially cannot leave early.
✅ 仕方がない、残業するほかない。— I have no choice but to work overtime.
わけにはいかない = “I simply cannot” (due to duty/morality). ほかない/しかない = “I have no choice but to” (resigned acceptance of the only option).
「わけにはいかない」=〜することができない(否定)
「ないわけにはいかない」=〜しないことができない=〜しなければならない(義務・肯定)
✅ 早退するわけにはいかない。— I cannot leave early.
✅ 出席しないわけにはいかない。— I have no choice but to attend.
わけにはいかない = cannot do ~. ないわけにはいかない = cannot NOT do ~ = must do ~. These are opposite in meaning!
Q2. 〜ないわけにはいかない
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞(ない形の語幹) + ないわけにはいかない
💡 「〜しないことはできない。責任や状況を考えると、どうしても〜しなければならない。」(義務・強制)
“I have no choice but to ~; I cannot avoid doing ~.” You are obligated to do it due to circumstances or responsibility.
① 社長に頼まれたから、引き受けないわけにはいかない。
Since the company president asked me, I have no choice but to accept.
② 彼女が泣いているから、助けないわけにはいかない。
Since she is crying, I have no choice but to help.
③ 約束したのだから、行かないわけにはいかない。
Since I made a promise, I have no choice but to go.
④ 社長と約束したのだから、会議に出席しないわけにはいかない。
Since I made a promise with the company president, I have no choice but to attend the meeting.
- 社長 = company president / CEO
- 約束 = promise
- 出席する = to attend
- 引き受ける = to take on / to accept
「ないわけにはいかない」=〜しなければならない(強い義務)
「なくてもいい」=〜しなくても問題ない(義務なし)
✅ 出席しないわけにはいかない。— I have no choice but to attend. (must attend)
✅ 出席しなくてもいい。— You don’t have to attend. (no obligation)
ないわけにはいかない = must do ~ (strong obligation). なくてもいい = don’t have to ~ (no obligation). Complete opposites!
「ないほうがいい」は「〜しない方がよい」というアドバイス。「義務」の意味はありません。
✅ 出席しないわけにはいかない。— I must attend. (obligation)
✅ 出席しないほうがいい。— It’s better not to attend. (advice)
ないわけにはいかない = strong personal obligation to do something. ないほうがいい = advice suggesting not to do something.
Q3. 〜うちに
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞(普通形)・い形容詞・な形容詞(な)・名詞(の) + うちに
💡 「〜の状態が続いている間に〜する。その状態が変わる前に行動しよう。」(緊迫感・今しかない)
“While ~ / before the situation changes.” Act now before the current state ends — there is urgency!
① 忘れないうちに、メモを取ろう。
Let’s take notes before we forget. (while we still remember)
② 若いうちに世界中を旅行したい。
I want to travel the world while I’m still young.
③ 雨が降らないうちに帰ろう。
Let’s go home before it starts raining.
④ 熱いうちに、どうぞ召し上がってください。
Please eat while it is still hot.
- 召し上がる = to eat / to drink (honorific form of 食べる・飲む)
- 若い = young
- 忘れる = to forget
- 緊迫感 = urgency / sense of urgency
「うちに」=今の状態が続いている間に行動する(緊迫感あり)
「あとで」=後でやる(今はしない)
✅ 熱いうちに食べて。— Eat it while it’s hot. (now, before it cools)
✅ 後で食べる。— I’ll eat it later. (not now)
うちに = “while ~ / before it changes” — act NOW. あとで = “later” — do it at a future time. Opposite timing!
「ために」は目的(〜するために〜する)を表します。「今のうちに行動しよう」という緊迫感はありません。
✅ 健康のために運動する。— I exercise for the sake of my health. (purpose)
✅ 健康なうちに運動しよう。— Let’s exercise while we’re still healthy. (urgency)
ために = “in order to ~ / for ~” (purpose/goal). うちに = “while ~ / before it changes” (urgency to act now).
Q4. 〜がちだ
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞ます形の語幹 / 名詞 + がちだ
💡 「よく〜する。〜になることが多い。」(好ましくない傾向・習慣)
“Tends to ~; often ends up ~.” Usually describes a negative or unwanted tendency or habit.
① 彼は授業を休みがちだ。
He tends to skip class often.
② 冬は運動不足になりがちだ。
In winter, we tend to lack exercise.
③ 一人暮らしは食事が偏りがちだ。
People living alone tend to have unbalanced diets.
④ 忙しいと、食事のバランスがくずれがちだ。
When you are busy, your diet tends to become unbalanced.
- くずれる = to collapse / to fall apart / to become unbalanced
- 休みがち = tends to be absent / prone to skipping
- 偏る = to be biased / unbalanced
- 傾向 = tendency / trend
「がちだ」=よく起きる傾向(ネガティブ)。「はずだ」=論理的根拠に基づく予測・期待。
✅ 忙しいと食事がくずれがちだ。— Diet tends to suffer when busy. (negative tendency)
✅ 彼はもうすぐ来るはずだ。— He should be here soon. (logical expectation)
がちだ = habitual negative tendency. はずだ = logical prediction based on evidence. Different in meaning and usage.
「わけだ」は「理由がわかった、なるほど〜だ」という納得を表します。傾向を表すのではありません。
✅ 食事がくずれがちだ。— Diet tends to become unbalanced. (ongoing tendency)
✅ ああ、それで食事がくずれたわけだ。— Ah, so THAT’S why your diet fell apart. (understanding the reason)
がちだ = “tends to ~” (repeated tendency). わけだ = “that’s why ~ / I see, it makes sense” (logical conclusion).
Q5. 〜わりに(は)
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞(普通形)・い形容詞・な形容詞(な)・名詞(の) + わりに(は)
💡 「〜から考えると、ちょっと意外だな。予想と違う結果だ。」(驚き・意外性)
“Considering ~, surprisingly… / For ~ / Despite ~.” The result is unexpectedly different from what you’d expect.
① 安いわりに品質がいい。
The quality is good for the price. (cheap → expected bad quality, but actually good)
② 若いわりにしっかりしている。
She’s very mature for her age. (young → expected immature, but actually mature)
③ 努力したわりに結果が出なかった。
Despite how hard I tried, I didn’t get results. (worked hard → expected good result, but didn’t)
④ このカフェはおしゃれなわりに、値段が安くてうれしい。
This café is stylish, but surprisingly the prices are affordable.
- おしゃれ(な)= stylish / fashionable
- 値段 = price
- 品質 = quality
- 意外(な)= unexpected / surprising
「わりに」=予想外の結果(意外!)。「だけあって」=予想通りの納得できる結果(さすが!)。
✅ 安いわりにおいしい。— It’s tasty for the price. (cheaper than expected to be good → surprise!)
✅ 有名店だけあっておいしい。— As expected of a famous restaurant, it’s delicious. (famous → of course it’s good!)
わりに = unexpected result (surprise). だけあって = expected/fitting result (as expected, natural).
「おかげで」=いい結果の原因(感謝)。「せいで」=悪い結果の原因(不満)。「わりに」は原因ではなく、予想との比較。
✅ 練習のおかげで上手になった。— Thanks to practice, I improved. (cause of good result)
✅ 練習したわりに上手にならなかった。— Despite practicing, I didn’t improve. (unexpected result)
わりに = comparison between expectation and reality. おかげで/せいで = giving the cause of a result (positive/negative).
Q6. 〜に関して
📌 パターン / Pattern:名詞 + に関して(は)/ に関する+名詞
💡 「〜について(フォーマルな言い方)。」(話題の導入・書き言葉・ビジネス)
“Regarding ~; concerning ~; about ~.” More formal than 〜について. Often used in business, academic, or written contexts.
① この問題に関しては、後で話し合いましょう。
Let’s discuss this issue later.
② 環境問題に関するレポートを書きました。
I wrote a report concerning environmental issues.
③ 採用に関してご質問があればお知らせください。
Please let us know if you have any questions regarding recruitment.
④ 新しい制度に関して、説明をお願いします。
Please give us an explanation regarding the new system.
- 制度 = system / institution / policy
- 環境問題 = environmental issues
- 採用 = recruitment / hiring
- に関する+名詞 = a noun related to ~ (e.g., 環境に関するレポート)
「に関して」=〜についての話題を導く(about ~)
「に対して」=〜に向かって行動する、〜を対象として(toward ~ / in response to ~)
✅ 新しい制度に関して説明してください。— Please explain the new system. (topic: the system)
✅ 質問に対して答える。— Answer in response to the question. (action directed toward the question)
に関して introduces a topic you’re talking/writing about. に対して shows the target or recipient of an action or feeling.
「によって」は原因・方法・変化の理由を表します。話題を導く意味はありません。
✅ 新しい制度に関して質問があります。— I have a question about the new system. (topic)
✅ 制度によって給料が変わる。— Salaries differ depending on the system. (variation/cause)
に関して = about ~ (introducing a topic). によって = depending on / because of / by ~ (showing cause, method, or variation).
Q7. 〜によって
📌 パターン / Pattern:名詞 + によって(3つの意味)
💡 意味① 「〜が原因で。〜のせいで。」(原因・理由)
“Because of ~; due to ~.” Expresses the cause of something.
💡 意味② 「〜を使って。〜の方法で。」(手段・方法)
“By ~; through ~.” Expresses method or means.
💡 意味③ 「〜によって違う。〜によって変わる。」(違い・変化)
“Depending on ~; varies by ~.” One factor causes results to differ.
① 事故によって道路が通行止めになった。(意味①)
The road was closed due to an accident. (cause)
② 努力によって夢を実現した。(意味②)
She realized her dream through hard work. (method)
③ 人によって意見が違う。(意味③)
Opinions differ depending on the person. (variation)
④ 同じ料理でも、地域によって味が変わる。(意味③)
Even the same dish can taste different depending on the region. (variation)
- 地域 = region / area
- 通行止め = road closure
- 実現する = to realize / to achieve
- 意見 = opinion
「によって」=〜によって結果が変わる(原因・変化)。「にとって」=〜の立場から見て(視点)。
✅ 地域によって味が変わる。— Flavor varies depending on the region. (variation)
✅ 私にとってこの仕事は大切だ。— This job is important to me. (my perspective)
によって = “depending on / varies by ~” (factor causing difference). にとって = “for ~ / from the perspective of ~” (viewpoint). These are completely different meanings!
3つの「に〜て」系表現の違いをまとめると:
「によって」=原因・方法・変化の理由
「に対して」=行動のターゲット・対象
「に関して」=話題・内容(〜について)
によって = cause/method/variation. に対して = target/recipient of action. に関して = topic being discussed. All look similar but have very different functions!
Q8. 〜に対して
📌 パターン / Pattern:名詞 + に対して/ に対する+名詞
💡 「〜に向かって行動する。〜を対象として。〜への(感情・行動)。」(行動・感情のターゲット)
“Toward ~; in response to ~; against ~.” Shows the target or recipient of an action, feeling, or attitude.
① 子供に対して優しくする。
Be kind toward children.
② 批判に対して冷静に答えた。
She responded calmly to the criticism.
③ 政府の政策に対する反対意見が多い。
There is a lot of opposition toward the government’s policy.
④ 先生の質問に対して、学生たちが積極的に答えた。
The students actively responded to the teacher’s questions.
- 積極的(に)= actively / proactively / positively
- 批判 = criticism
- 冷静(に)= calmly / coolly
- に対する+名詞 = relating to ~ / toward ~ (e.g., 質問に対する答え)
「に対して」=行動・感情の向かう先(ターゲット)。「によって」=原因・方法・変化。
✅ 質問に対して答える。— Answer in response to the question. (the question is the target of the action)
✅ 質問によって答えが違う。— The answer differs depending on the question. (the question causes variation)
に対して = target of an action or feeling. によって = cause/factor causing a result. They cannot be substituted for each other here.
「をはじめ」は「〜を代表として、他にもたくさんある」という意味で、代表例を挙げるときに使います。
✅ 質問に対して答えた。— Answered in response to the question. (target of action)
✅ 東京をはじめ、大阪でも人気だ。— It’s popular in Tokyo and other cities such as Osaka. (representative example)
に対して = target/recipient of action. をはじめ = “starting with ~; including ~” — presents the most representative example first.
Q9. 〜だけでなく
📌 パターン / Pattern:名詞 / 動詞(普通形)・い形容詞・な形容詞(普通形) + だけでなく(、〜も〜)
💡 「〜だけではない。他にも〜がある。〜はもちろん、さらに〜も。」(追加情報・拡張)
“Not only ~, but also ~.” Indicates that something goes beyond just one thing. Natural and common in speech and writing.
① 英語だけでなく、フランス語も話せる。
She can speak not only English but also French.
② この店は安いだけでなく、サービスもいい。
This shop is not only cheap but also has good service.
③ 勉強だけでなく、スポーツも大切だ。
Not only studying but also sports are important.
④ このクラスには、韓国人だけでなく、様々な国から来た留学生がいる。
In this class, there are international students from various countries, not just Korean students.
- 韓国人 = Korean person
- 様々(な)= various / diverse
- 留学生 = international student
- のみならず = not only ~ (more formal version of だけでなく)
「だけで」=〜のみで(限定・制限)。「だけでなく」=〜だけではない(追加・拡張)。
✅ 韓国人だけでなく、いろんな国の人がいる。— Not only Korean students, but people from many countries. (expanding)
✗ 韓国人だけで、いろんな国の人がいる。— ✗ (contradicts itself — “only Koreans” + “many countries” is a contradiction)
だけで = “only ~; with just ~” (limits). だけでなく = “not only ~” (expands beyond one thing).
「の上に」は「〜に加えて、さらに〜も(重なる・悪化)」という意味で、主にネガティブな文脈で使います。
✅ 仕事が忙しい上に、体も悪い。— On top of being busy with work, I’m also not feeling well.
✗ 韓国人の上に、いろんな国の人がいる。— ✗ (unnatural — の上に follows adjectives/verbs, not nouns like 韓国人 in this way)
の上に = “on top of ~ / in addition to ~” (often for negative accumulation). だけでなく = “not only ~ but also ~” (neutral addition, works in all contexts).
Q10. 〜ついでに
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞(辞書形・た形)・名詞+の + ついでに
💡 「ちょうどいい機会だから、別のこともやろう。主な行動をするついでに、もう一つする。」(追加の行動)
“While I’m at it / Since I’m going there anyway / Taking the opportunity to also do ~.” Doing an extra task alongside the main task.
① 買い物に行くついでに、図書館にも寄った。
While I was going shopping, I also stopped by the library.
② 散歩したついでに、コンビニで牛乳を買った。
While I was out for a walk, I bought milk at the convenience store.
③ 日本に来たついでに、京都にも行った。
Since I came to Japan, I also went to Kyoto.
④ 郵便局に行くついでに、銀行にも寄った。
While I was going to the post office, I also stopped by the bank.
- 郵便局 = post office
- 銀行 = bank
- 寄る = to stop by / to drop in
- 機会 = opportunity / occasion
「ついでに」=主な行動に追加してもう一つする(追加)。「かわりに」=〜ではなく別のことをする(入れかえ)。
✅ 郵便局に行くついでに、銀行にも寄った。— I went to the post office AND also the bank. (both activities)
✅ 郵便局に行くかわりに、銀行に行った。— Instead of going to the post office, I went to the bank. (replaced one with the other)
ついでに = ADDING an extra task (do both). かわりに = REPLACING one thing with another (do the other instead).
「ために」は目的(〜のために〜する)を表します。「ちょうどいい機会だから」という意味はありません。
✅ 郵便局に行くついでに、銀行に寄った。— Since I was going to the post office anyway, I stopped by the bank too. (opportunistic)
✅ 郵便局に行くために、家を出た。— I left home in order to go to the post office. (purpose)
ついでに = taking the opportunity while doing something else. ために = doing something for the specific purpose of ~.
