About half a year after I came to Japan, I experienced a big earthquake for the first time. That night, while I was watching TV in my room, the floor suddenly began to shake hard. I got scared and was about to run outside right away.
However, a senior colleague who lives in the same apartment building stopped me in a loud voice. If you move while the shaking is going on, things on the shelves or broken glass can fall on you, so there is a risk of getting hurt instead. He put me under the table and said, “Protect your head first.”
After the shaking stopped, the two of us turned off the gas in the kitchen and opened the door to secure an escape route. According to him, people used to be taught, “When an earthquake happens, turn off the fire first.” Now, though, it is believed that protecting your own body comes before turning off the fire.
Since that night, I have tried not to forget this way of thinking. What matters in an earthquake is not only what you do. It is the order in which you do it.
Paragraph 2 gives the reason: moving during the shaking can make falling objects hurt you.
Option 1 is true in the real world, but it is not in the text. Choosing what the passage says — not what you already know — is a key reading skill.
“This way of thinking” points to the sentence just before it, after 「しかし」.
The final paragraph states the writer’s conclusion: what matters is the order of your actions.
It is true that the senior helped him, but that is a detail, not the main point. What is written is not always what the writer most wants to say.
