Q1⭐⭐⭐ 難しい / Hard

以下いかの4つの語句ごくを並ならべ替かえ、正ただしい文ぶんにしましょう。
Arrange the four words below into the correct sentence.

🇬🇧 Grammar Notes — 〜をきっかけに

「〜をきっかけに」 means “taking ~ as the trigger / ever since ~”. Something becomes the turning point that changes what follows. It always needs a noun + を in front (結婚を, 病気を, 出会いを).

「〜を契機に」 is the stiffer, written-Japanese version of the same idea.

Key word order: [noun + を] + きっかけに + [the change that followed].
The word on the ★ (3rd blank) is 「仕事を」 — not the grammar word itself, so read the whole sentence carefully.
Q2⭐⭐⭐ 難しい / Hard

以下いかの4つの語句ごくを並ならべ替かえ、正ただしい文ぶんにしましょう。
Arrange the four words below into the correct sentence.

🇬🇧 Grammar Notes — 〜あげく

「〜あげく(に)」 means “after a long process of ~, in the end …”. The outcome is usually a disappointing one, which is what separates it from the neutral 〜た結果.

It attaches to a plain past verb: 悩んだ + あげく. さんざん at the start and 結局 later in the sentence are natural partners for this pattern.

Key word order: [plain past verb] + あげく + 結局 + [final outcome].
The word on the ★ (3rd blank) is 「結局」.
Q3⭐⭐ 普通 / Normal

以下いかの4つの語句ごくを並ならべ替かえ、正ただしい文ぶんにしましょう。
Arrange the four words below into the correct sentence.

🇬🇧 Grammar Notes — 〜どころか

「〜どころか」 means “let alone ~ / far from ~”. You name one thing, then go further and name something even more basic that is also impossible.

The order is what this question tests: the harder item (漢字) comes first, the more basic item (ひらがな) second, and 「も」 or 「さえ」 almost always follows the second one. 漢字どころかひらがなも読めない = “he can’t even read hiragana, let alone kanji.”

Key word order: [harder item] + どころか + [easier item] + も.
The word on the ★ (3rd blank) is 「ひらがな」.
Q4⭐⭐⭐ 難しい / Hard

以下いかの4つの語句ごくを並ならべ替かえ、正ただしい文ぶんにしましょう。
Arrange the four words below into the correct sentence.

🇬🇧 Grammar Notes — 〜折に

「〜折に」 is a polite, formal way of saying 「〜ときに」 (“on the occasion of ~”). You will see it often in letters and set greetings.

Unlike とき, it is not used for everyday routine actions (you cannot say ご飯を食べる折に). It marks a special occasion. Note: this expression sits at the border of N2 and N1.

Key word order: [plain past verb] + 折に + [what happened then].
The word on the ★ (4th blank) is 「友人に」 — 「古い 友人に」 form one unit, so 古い fills the 3rd blank.
