Q1. 〜はずがない
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞(普通形)・い形容詞・な形容詞(な)・名詞(の) + はずがない
💡 「理由や証拠から考えて、そんなことはありえない。」(論理的な否定・冷静な確信)
“There is no way ~; it can’t be ~.” A logical, calm denial based on reasoning or evidence.
① 彼はもう帰ったはずがない。まだ5時だ。
There’s no way he has gone home already. It’s only 5 o’clock.
② そんな簡単な問題が解けないはずがない。
There’s no way you can’t solve such a simple problem.
③ 彼女はそんな嘘をつくはずがない。とても正直な人だ。
There’s no way she would tell such a lie. She’s a very honest person.
④ 彼女はあんなに優しいのに、そんな酷いことを言うはずがない。
She is so kind, so there is no way she would say something so terrible.
- 優しい = kind / gentle
- 酷いことを言う = to say something terrible
- 正直(な)= honest
- 証拠 = evidence / proof
「はずがない」=論理・証拠に基づいた冷静な否定(「理屈で考えてありえない」)
「わけがない」=感情・主観が強い否定(「そんなことあるわけない!」より強い確信)
✅ 彼女が嘘をつくはずがない。— There’s no way she would lie. (logical, evidence-based)
✅ あの人が来るわけがないよ。— There’s absolutely no way that person is coming. (emotional, stronger)
はずがない = logical denial based on reasoning/evidence (calm). わけがない = strong subjective denial, often emotional. Both mean “impossible/no way” but with different nuances.
「がたい」は「気持ち的にとても難しい」(感情的な困難)。「はずがない」は「論理的にありえない」(証拠に基づく否定)。
✅ 信じがたいことだ。— It’s hard to believe. (emotionally hard)
✅ そんなことがあるはずがない。— That can’t possibly be the case. (logically impossible)
がたい = emotionally or psychologically hard to do. はずがない = logically impossible based on evidence or reasoning.
Q2. 〜ふりをする
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞(普通形)・い形容詞・な形容詞(な)・名詞(の) + ふりをする
💡 「本当はそうじゃないのに、わざとそのように見せる。」(意図的な演技・嘘のふるまい)
“To pretend to be ~; to act as if ~.” Deliberately making it look like something is true when it isn’t.
① 怖くないのに、怖いふりをした。
I wasn’t scared, but I pretended to be scared.
② 彼女は元気なふりをしていたが、実は辛かった。
She was pretending to be fine, but she was actually struggling.
③ 寝ているふりをして、話を聞いていた。
I was pretending to be asleep and listening to the conversation.
④ 彼は知っているのに、知らないふりをしていた。
Even though he knew, he was pretending not to know.
- 知らないふりをする = to pretend not to know
- 元気なふりをする = to pretend to be fine
- 寝ているふりをする = to pretend to be asleep
- わざと = deliberately / on purpose
「うちに」は「状態が変わる前に〜する」という意味で、わざとそのように見せる意図はありません。
✅ 知らないふりをしていた。— He was pretending not to know. (deliberate deception)
✅ 熱いうちに食べて。— Eat it while it’s hot. (before the state changes, urgency)
ふりをする = deliberate performance / acting as if something is true. うちに = while the current state continues / before it changes.
「にわたって」は「〜の期間・範囲にわたって」という意味で、演技・見せかけの意味はありません。また「知らないにわたって」という形は文法的に存在しません。
✅ 知らないふりをしていた。— Was pretending not to know. ✓
✗ 知らないにわたっていた。— ✗ (grammatically impossible here)
ふりをする = an intentional act of pretending. にわたって = spanning a range of time or space (no pretending meaning).
Q3. 〜かける / 〜かけの
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞ます形の語幹 + かける(動詞)/ かけの+名詞 / かけ(名詞)
💡 「〜し始めたけど、まだ終わっていない。途中でやめてある状態。」(未完了・途中)
“Started ~ but not finished; left halfway; in the middle of ~.” Describes something begun but still incomplete.
① 食べかけのケーキを冷蔵庫に入れた。
I put the half-eaten cake in the refrigerator.
② 書きかけの手紙をそのままにしてしまった。
I left the half-written letter just as it was.
③ この仕事はやりかけなので、今日は帰れない。
This work is only half-done, so I can’t go home today.
④ 机の上に置いたままの、読みかけの本の続きがとても気になる。
I really want to know what happens next in the half-read book left on the desk.
- 読みかけ = half-read / partway through reading
- 食べかけ = half-eaten
- 書きかけ = half-written
- 続き = continuation / what comes next
「かけ」=始めたが途中でやめた(未完了)
「きった」=最後まで全部した(完全完了)
「とおした」=やめないで最後まで続けた(継続して完走)
✅ 読みかけの本 — a half-read book (started, not finished)
✅ 読みきった本 — a book I finished completely (fully done)
✅ 読みとおした本 — a book I read all the way through without stopping
かけ = unfinished/abandoned. きった = fully completed. とおした = kept going all the way without quitting. Three very different meanings!
「最中」は「今まさに〜している真っ最中(あの瞬間)」を表します。未完了の状態ではなく、現在進行中の瞬間です。
✅ 読みかけの本 — a half-read book (left unfinished; abandoned state)
✅ 読んでいる最中に電話が来た — The phone rang while I was right in the middle of reading.
✗ 読み最中の本 — ✗ (unnatural — 最中 does not attach to verb stems this way)
かけの = unfinished/abandoned state. 最中 = right in the middle of doing something at that moment (cannot attach to verb stems directly).
Q4. 〜きる / 〜きれる
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞ます形の語幹 + きる(完了)/ きれる(可能)/ きれない(不可能)
💡 「最後まで全部〜する。完全に〜する。」(完全完了・徹底)
“To do ~ completely; to finish ~ all the way.” Doing something fully with nothing left undone.
💡 「〜きれない」=「全部は〜できない」(量が多すぎて完全にはできない)
“Cannot do ~ completely.” Too much to finish or handle.
① この量は食べきれない。
I can’t eat all of this. (too much to finish)
② 疲れきって、すぐ眠ってしまった。
I was completely exhausted and fell asleep right away.
③ 説明が多すぎて、一度では理解しきれなかった。
There was too much to explain to fully understand in one go.
④ 長い小説だったが、一晩で読みきってしまった。
It was a long novel, but I ended up finishing it all in one night.
- 読みきる = to read all the way to the end / finish reading completely
- 疲れきる = to be completely exhausted
- 〜きれない = cannot do ~ completely (too much to handle)
- 一晩 = one night / overnight
「きる」=最後まで全部した(完全完了)。「かけ」=始めたが途中でやめた(未完了)。正反対!
✅ 読みきった。— Finished reading it completely. ✓
✅ 読みかけだ。— Only got partway through reading. ✓
きった = 100% done, nothing left. かけ = not done, abandoned partway. Complete opposites!
「だす」=急に〜し始めた(開始)。「っぱなし」=〜したまま放置(継続放置)。「きる」は完全完了。
✅ 泣きだした。— Suddenly started crying. (beginning)
✅ 泣ききった。— Cried it all out completely. (full completion)
✅ 泣きっぱなしだ。— Just keeps crying without stopping / left crying. (ongoing without resolution)
だす = suddenly began. きる = fully completed. っぱなし = left doing something without stopping or fixing it.
Q5. 〜とおす / ぶっとおし
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞ます形の語幹 + とおす / ぶっとおし(慣用表現)
💡 「最後までやめないで〜し続ける。途中でやめずに〜する。」(継続して完走)
“To keep doing ~ all the way to the very end; to see through without stopping.” Emphasizes persistence and not giving up.
① 試験が難しくても、最後まで頑張りとおした。
Even though the exam was hard, I kept trying all the way to the end.
② 雨の中でもマラソンを走りとおした。
I ran the marathon all the way through, even in the rain.
③ 彼女は辛いときでも笑いとおした。
She kept smiling all the way through, even during the hard times.
④ 4時間ぶっとおしでピアノの練習をしたので手が痛い。
My hands hurt because I practiced piano for four straight hours without a break.
- ぶっとおし = straight through / without a break (ぶっ + 通し; set expression)
- 走りとおす = to run all the way to the end
- 頑張りとおす = to keep at it all the way through
- 最後まで = all the way to the end
「とおす」=途中でやめないで最後まで続けた(過程・持続を強調)。「きる」=全部・完全に〜した(結果を強調)。
✅ 読みとおした。— Read it all the way through without stopping. (emphasis on persisting)
✅ 読みきった。— Finished reading it completely. (emphasis on the result: 100% done)
とおす = emphasizes not quitting, persisting to the end (process). きる = emphasizes full completion with nothing left (result).
「っぱなし」は「〜したまま、元に戻さないで放置している」という意味で、ネガティブな放置のニュアンスです。「とおし」は努力・継続のポジティブなニュアンス。
✅ 4時間ぶっとおしで練習した。— Practiced 4 hours straight. (positive continuous effort)
✅ テレビをつけっぱなしだ。— The TV is left on. (neglected, careless)
とおす/とおし = positive: kept going all the way without stopping. っぱなし = often negative/careless: left doing something without fixing it.
Q6. 〜だす
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞ます形の語幹 + だす
💡 「急に〜し始める。予想していなかったことが突然始まる。」(突然の開始)
“To suddenly start doing ~; to burst into ~.” Used when something begins unexpectedly or all at once.
① 急に雨が降りだした。
It suddenly started raining.
② 赤ちゃんが泣きだした。
The baby suddenly started crying.
③ 彼女は急に笑いだした。
She suddenly burst out laughing.
④ 授業が終わった瞬間、子どもたちが走りだした。
The moment class ended, the children suddenly burst into a run.
- 走りだす = to suddenly start running
- 泣きだす = to suddenly start crying / burst into tears
- 降りだす = to suddenly start raining/snowing
- 瞬間 = the moment / instant
「だす」=突然・予想外に始まった(開始のニュアンス)。「かけた」=始めたがまだ終わっていない(未完了)。
✅ 走りだした。— Suddenly started running. (unexpected start ✓)
✅ 走りかけたが、やめた。— Started to run but stopped. (left halfway ✓)
だす = the surprising/sudden start of an action. かける = started but didn’t complete (left halfway).
「だす」は行動の「始まり」、「とおした」「きった」は行動の「完了・完走」を表します。
✅ 泣きだした。— Started crying suddenly. (beginning)
✅ 泣きとおした。— Kept crying all the way through. (persistent completion)
✅ 泣ききった。— Cried it all out. (fully done, nothing left)
だす = the start. とおした = kept going all the way through. きった = fully completed.
Q7. 〜がたい
📌 パターン / Pattern:動詞ます形の語幹 + がたい
💡 「〜するのが気持ち的にとても難しい。どうしても〜できない。」(感情的・心理的な困難)
“Hard to ~; difficult to ~.” Used when something is emotionally or psychologically very hard to do, not merely physically difficult.
① あの映画のラストシーンは忘れがたい。
The final scene of that movie is hard to forget.
② 彼女への感謝は言い表せがたいほどだ。
My gratitude toward her is almost too hard to put into words.
③ 受け入れがたい現実だが、認めるしかない。
It’s a reality that’s hard to accept, but I have no choice but to acknowledge it.
④ 親友が裏切ったなんて、信じがたいことだ。
It is hard to believe that my close friend would betray me.
- 信じがたい = hard to believe
- 忘れがたい = hard to forget / unforgettable
- 受け入れがたい = hard to accept
- 親友 = close friend / best friend
「がたい」=感情・心理的な理由でどうしても難しい(より強く、限られた動詞に使う)
「にくい」=一般的にやりにくい・難しい(幅広い動詞に使える)
✅ 信じがたいことだ。— Hard to believe. (emotionally powerful; strong word)
✅ この文字は読みにくい。— These characters are hard to read. (physically/practically difficult)
がたい = emotionally or morally hard to do (stronger, used with fewer verbs: 信じる, 忘れる, 受け入れる etc.). にくい = generally difficult or awkward to do (broader usage).
「すぎない」は「〜するのが多すぎない」「程度をこえない」という意味で、感情的な困難を表しません。
✅ 信じがたいことだ。— It’s hard to believe. (emotional difficulty)
✅ 信じすぎないように。— Don’t believe too much / don’t be too trusting. (limiting degree)
がたい = emotionally hard or impossible. すぎない = not doing something in excess (staying within a limit).
Q8. 〜にわたって
📌 パターン / Pattern:名詞(時間・回数・範囲) + にわたって / にわたる+名詞
💡 「〜の間ずっと。〜の全体を通して。」(長い時間・広い範囲・複数回の強調)
“Spanning ~; throughout ~; across ~.” Emphasizes that something covers a wide range of time, space, or number of occasions.
① その交渉は3日間にわたって続いた。
The negotiations continued over a span of three days.
② 日本全国にわたって販売されている。
It is sold across the whole country of Japan.
③ 複数回にわたる会議の末に決定した。
A decision was reached after meetings spanning multiple occasions.
④ このプロジェクトは5年間にわたって続けられてきた。
This project has been continued spanning a period of five years.
- 年間 = period of years
- 全国 = the whole country / nationwide
- 複数回 = multiple times / on multiple occasions
- にわたる+名詞 = spanning ~ (e.g., 5年間にわたる研究 = research spanning 5 years)
「にわたって」=期間・範囲の広がりを強調(5年間にわたって)
「を通じて」=①期間中ずっと(一年を通じて)②手段・経由(友人を通じて)
✅ 5年間にわたって続いた。— Continued spanning 5 years. (emphasis on the range/span)
✅ 友人を通じて知り合った。— Met through a friend. (via a medium)
にわたって = spans a range of time, space, or occasions (coverage). を通じて = ① throughout a period OR ② via / through a person or medium.
「に応じて」は「〜に合わせて」「〜によって変える」という条件への対応で、範囲・期間の広がりを表しません。
✅ 5年間にわたって続けた。— Continued for 5 years. (span of time)
✅ 需要に応じて生産を変えた。— Changed production according to demand. (adjustment)
にわたって = spanning a range. に応じて = adjusting to / according to a condition.
Q9. 〜を通じて / 〜を通して
📌 パターン / Pattern:名詞 + を通じて / を通して(ほぼ同じ意味)
💡 意味① 「〜を使って。〜を経由して。」(手段・経路)
“Through ~; via ~; by means of ~.” A person, medium, or channel that acts as the route.
💡 意味② 「〜の間ずっと。」(期間を通じて)
“Throughout ~.” During an entire period without interruption.
① SNSを通じて情報が広がった。(意味①)
Information spread through social media. (via a medium)
② 日本は一年を通じて温暖な地域が多い。(意味②)
Japan has many warm regions throughout the year. (throughout a period)
③ スポーツを通じて友達ができた。(意味①)
I made friends through sports. (via an activity)
④ 彼とは、共通の友人を通じて知り合った。(意味①)
We got to know each other through a mutual friend. (via a person)
- 共通 = mutual / in common
- 友人 = friend (slightly more formal than 友達)
- 知り合う = to get to know each other / to become acquainted
- を通して ≈ を通じて(ほぼ同じ意味)
「を通じて」=①手段・経路(友人を通じて)②ずっと(一年を通じて)
「にわたって」=範囲・期間の広がりを強調(5年間にわたって)
✅ 友人を通じて知り合った。— Met through a friend. (via a person ✓)
✅ 5年間にわたって続いた。— Continued spanning 5 years. (range ✓)
✗ 友人にわたって知り合った。— ✗ (unnatural — にわたって cannot mean “via a person”)
を通じて = via a person/medium OR throughout a period. にわたって = across/spanning a range of time or space. Cannot be swapped here.
「に対して」は「〜に向かって行動する」という行動のターゲットを表します。経路・手段の意味はありません。
✅ 友人を通じて知り合った。— Met through a friend. (route/medium)
✅ 友人に対して感謝した。— Felt grateful toward my friend. (target of feeling)
を通じて = via / through (as a route or medium). に対して = toward / directed at (target of action or feeling).
Q10. 〜に応じて
📌 パターン / Pattern:名詞 + に応じて / に応じた+名詞
💡 「〜に合わせて。〜によって変える。条件や状況に対応して行動する。」(対応・調整)
“According to ~; depending on ~; in response to ~.” Adjusting your action to fit the condition or situation.
① 状況に応じて対応を変える。
Change the response according to the situation.
② 能力に応じた仕事を与える。
Give work that is suited to one’s ability.
③ 収入に応じて税金が変わる。
Taxes change depending on income.
④ 部屋の大きさに応じて、家具の数を決めた方がいい。
It is better to decide the number of pieces of furniture according to the size of the room.
- 大きさ = size
- 家具 = furniture
- 能力 = ability / capability
- に応じた+名詞 = suited to ~ / based on ~ (e.g., 能力に応じた仕事)
「に応じて」=〜に合わせて積極的に対応・変化させる(主体的な調整)
「によって」=〜が原因で・〜によって変わる(変化の原因・理由)
✅ 状況に応じて対応を変える。— Change the response according to the situation. (active adjustment)
✅ 状況によって対応が違う。— The response differs depending on the situation. (passive variation)
に応じて = actively adjusting to a condition (you control the change). によって = stating that a result varies based on a factor (the factor causes the change).
この3つの「に〜て / を〜て」系の違いをまとめると:
「に応じて」=〜に合わせて対応・調整する(条件への対応)
「にわたって」=〜の期間・範囲にわたって(広がりの強調)
「を通じて」=〜を経由して・〜を手段として(手段・経路・期間)
に応じて = adjusting to a condition. にわたって = spanning a range of time/space. を通じて = via / through (as a route or throughout a period).
