Situation: Lisa is going to start working as a new employee at Sakura Foods Co., Ltd. from April next month. A notice titled “New Employee Training Information” has arrived from the company. Lisa is vegan, so she does not eat meat or fish.
Q1: What does Lisa have to do about her lunch?
Q2: What time does the workplace tour start?
Notice — Sakura Foods Co., Ltd., New Employee Training:
Date & meeting place: Monday, April 6. Place: 3F, Large Meeting Room.
Schedule (9:00–16:30):
9:00–9:30 — Reception.
From 9:30 — You will be given a uniform at reception, so please change into it. After that, we will explain the company rules and so on.
12:00–13:00 — Lunch break.
13:00–15:00 — Group work (about 2 hours).
After it ends, there is a 30-minute break, and then the workplace tour (about 1 hour).
16:30 — Scheduled finish.
About lunch (12:00–13:00): We will provide either a regular boxed lunch or a vegan boxed lunch. Only if you want the vegan one, please contact HR by e-mail by April 1. If you do not contact us, you will receive the regular lunch. The lunch is free.
Absence or lateness: Call HR by 8:30 on the day.
Answer Q1: 4. The notice says to contact HR by e-mail by April 1 “only if you want the vegan lunch.” Lisa is vegan, so she must send that e-mail.
Answer Q2: 2 (3:30 p.m.). Group work ends at 15:00, then there is a 30-minute break, so the tour starts at 15:30.

= Only if you want the vegan one, please contact HR. (のみ is a formal way to say だけ, common in notices. This one word decides Q1.)
= Please contact HR by e-mail by April 1. (までに = deadline. Compare まで = “until, continuously.”)
= After taking a 30-minute break, the workplace tour. (This is the key to Q2.)
= If there is no contact, it will be the regular lunch.
Look at the “About lunch” section. It says to contact HR by e-mail by April 1 only if you want the vegan lunch. Lisa is vegan, so this applies to her. Choose the option where both the deadline (April 1) and the method (e-mail) are correct.
“If you do not contact us, you will get the regular lunch.” Doing nothing means a lunch she cannot eat. - 2:
At reception you only receive a uniform. The lunch must be arranged in advance, not on the day.
The 8:30 phone call is for absence or lateness. It is not for the lunch, and the date is too late. - 4:
Both the deadline (April 1) and the method (e-mail) match the notice.
The start time of the tour is not written directly. Combine “13:00–15:00 group work” and “after it ends, a 30-minute break, then the tour” to calculate 15:00 + 30 min = 15:30.
15:00 is when the group work ENDS. - 2:15:00
Ends at 15:00, then a 30-minute break — so it starts at 15:30.
The break is 30 minutes, not one hour. - 4:16:30
16:30 is when the whole training is scheduled to FINISH.
